Job summary

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is seeking a Maintenance Trainee for the Bus Maintenance program. This two-year apprenticeship blends classroom instruction with on-the-job training to prepare you for graduation into a General Transit Bus Garage Mechanic C.

During the program you will work under the guidance of experienced supervisors and mentor mechanics, aiming to earn an ASE certification and CDL where applicable.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma with two years vocational training in electrical, mechanical, or electronics.
  • One year of related work experience may be considered with 1,000 hours at a grade level.
  • Must obtain ASE certification in Transit Bus prior to program completion.
  • Possession of valid CDL with endorsements for passenger bus and air brakes; CDL learner's permit acceptable with conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Attend formal training classes related to basic, intermediate and advanced urban transit bus maintenance.
  • Gains familiarity with maintenance, inspection, repair, removal, installation, troubleshooting, testing and calibration of WMATA buses and equipment.
  • Under supervision, uses hand tools, power tools and test equipment to inspect, diagnose and repair WMATA buses and equipment malfunctions.
  • Work with assigned OJT mentors to affect repairs and service of WMATA vehicles and equipment.
  • Completes all documentation and reports associated with operation and maintenance.
