Job summary

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) invites applications for the Maintenance Trainee, Bus Maintenance position. The two-year WMATA Technical Skills Program (TSP) combines classroom and on-the-job training to graduate as a Mechanic, grade C, under supervision from experienced staff and Mentor mechanics.

Upon completion, trainees are prepared for a General Transit Bus Garage Mechanic C role.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma with two years of Vocational Training in Electrical, Mechanical or Electronics.
  • In lieu of Vocational Training, one year of related work experience may be considered after 1,000 hours at a grade level.
  • Possession of a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for passenger bus and air brakes or acceptable subs.
  • Careful adherence to safety and maintenance procedures during training and OJT.

Responsibilities

  • Attend formal training classes and pass exams with 75% or higher.
  • Develop skills in maintenance, inspection, repair, and calibration of WMATA buses and equipment.
  • Use hand and power tools, test equipment to diagnose and repair bus malfunctions.
  • Work with mentors to perform repairs and service of WMATA vehicles.
  • Complete all training documentation and reports.
