Job summary

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority offers a Maintenance Trainee, Bus Maintenance position as part of the WMATA Technical Skills Program (TSP). The two-year apprenticeship leads to a General Transit Bus Garage Mechanic C role after graduation, with mentorship and structured OJT.

Incumbents complete classroom and hands-on training, earning the ASE certification in Transit Bus, while working under supervision to gain experience across maintenance disciplines.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic systems.
• Ability to troubleshoot and interpret manuals and schematics.
• Proficiency with basic electrical/mechanical tools.
• Must complete formal and on-the-job training during TSP.

Responsibilities

• Attend formal training classes and pass assessments.
• Inspect, diagnose, and repair WMATA buses and equipment.
• Use hand and test tools under supervision to perform maintenance tasks.
• Document maintenance activities and training outcomes.
• Assist with safety and operational procedures.
