Moffatt & Nichol in Norfolk, VA seeks a mid-level Structural Engineer Inspector for bridge and waterfront projects. The role focuses on leading field inspections, preparing reports, and coordinating with teams to ensure quality and compliance.

You will work with FHWA/NHI criteria, inspect bridges and waterfront structures, and support design and rehabilitation assignments. Travel to nearby sites is expected, with a strong emphasis on safety and QA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Professional Engineer licensure required; ability to obtain in Virginia via reciprocity within 6 months of hire.
• 4 to 7 years of structural inspection experience.
• FHWA-NHI-130055 certification.
• NSTM/Fracture Critical certification FHWA-NHI-130078.
• Waterfront inspection experience preferred.
• Field requirements are 5 days per week; hours may vary by weather or daylight; some weekends may be required.
• Availability to travel overnight/out of town ~10–15%.
• Boater Safety Card preferred.
• Willingness to work from Norfolk, VA office on non-field days.
• Pre-employment drug screen and background check; NIST 800-171 compliance.
• E-Verify; employment contingent on legal ability to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

• Leads, coordinates and participates in field inspections, condition assessments and construction observation of transportation and waterfront projects.
• Utilizes data entry, manipulation and technical writing for inspection reports and proposals.
• Prepares technical reports, specifications, and cost estimates for design, rehabilitation and inspection projects.
• Provides QA reviews of inspection reports; ensures adherence to Quality Management System.
• Performs other duties as required.
