Job summary

Moffatt & Nichol is seeking a Structural Engineer Inspector (Bridge & Waterfront) at a senior level for our Norfolk, VA office. The role leads field inspections of transportation bridges, highways, and coastal facilities, applying FHWA/NHI criteria and safety practices to deliver inspection reports and technical observations.

The ideal candidate holds a Civil or Structural Engineering degree, a PE license with Virginia reciprocity within 6 months, and 10–15 years of inspection experience, plus

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Professional Engineer licensure is required; with the ability to obtain in the State of Virginia via reciprocity within 6 months of hire
• 10 to 15 years of structural inspection experience
• FHWA-NHI-130055 certification
• NSTM/Fracture Critical certification FHWA-NHI-130078
• Waterfront inspection experience is preferred
• Field requirements are 5 days per week. Hours may vary due to weather or daylight. Some weekends may be required
• Availability and willingness to travel overnight / out of town approximately 10-15%
• Boater Safety Card preferred
• Willingness to work from Moffatt & Nichol’s Norfolk, VA office on non-field days
• Selected candidate must consent to and pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screening
• All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Responsibilities

• Partners with other professionals and departments to gather information for projects
• Works collaboratively with all members of the inspection group
• Leads, coordinates and participates in field inspections, condition assessments and construction observation of transportation (bridges, highways, and roadways) and waterfront construction sites
• Utilizes data entry/manipulation and technical writing skills for the preparation and review of inspection reports, proposals, etc.
• Leads in preparing technical reports, specifications, and cost estimates for design, rehabilitation and inspection projects
• Provides quality assurance reviews of inspection reports
• Ensures project adherence to Moffatt & Nichol’s Quality Management System
• Performs other duties as required
