Job summary

Moffatt & Nichol in Norfolk, VA is seeking an entry-level Bridge Engineer to join our team. The role focuses on supporting structural design tasks for waterfront infrastructure projects and coordinating with the Bridge and Rail Team across disciplines.

The ideal candidate holds a Civil Engineering degree (Master’s preferred) with 0–2 years of experience, familiar with AutoCAD, MicroStation, and structural analysis tools.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering; Master’s degree preferred.
• 0–2 years of experience; EIT preferred.
• Experience with VDOT projects desirable.
• Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation and/or Open Bridge Modeler desirable.
• Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, presentation).
• Background check per NIST 800-171; U.S. employment eligibility and E-Verify compliance.

Responsibilities

• Utilize structural analysis software for design, such as Leap Bridge Concrete, Leap Bridge Steel, Open Bridge Modeler, STAAD, SAP2000, AASHTOWARE Bridge Rating (BrR).
• Complete design tasks with supervision and learn to work independently
• Coordinate the structural design with other disciplines and construction team
• Become familiar with various structural standards and building codes such as AASHTO, VDOT, AREMA, and UPRR/BNSF guidelines
• Compile data and perform calculations required for the preparation of drawings and design studies
• Prepare cost estimates
• Prepare construction documents
• Collaborate with Bridge and Rail Team and all company disciplines
• Conduct bridge inspections and assist in supervision of site investigations as needed
