Job summary

Hotel Californian in Santa Barbara is seeking a friendly and professional Host/Hostess to greet guests, manage reservations, and guide them to recommended dining and activities in the area.

You will perform host duties, take orders at the counter, handle payments, and help maintain a welcoming cafe environment while ensuring guest satisfaction and smooth service flow. This position supports the team to deliver an exceptional guest experience.

Qualifications

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Prior host/barista experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Greet guests entering the restaurant with superior service.

• Oversee restaurant operations in the absence of a manager/supervisor.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Greet guests when entering the restaurant with superior customer service.
• Answer phone and record reservations for large parties.
• Able to make recommendations for guests to other local restaurants and activities.
• Thank every guest upon departure, invite them to return, and wish them a fond farewell.
• Ensure each guest is greeted and that all food and beverage operations are running smoothly.
• Clean and clear service areas.
• Oversee all aspects of restaurant during absence of Manager and/or Supervisor.
• Be familiar with operation of P.O.S. system and manual system procedures.
• Ensure work area is clean and clear of standing water, debris or any objects that can obstruct the job duties from being performed safely, efficiently and effectively.
• Take customer orders at the counter
• Receive payments and present change to customers
• Pack food items, make coffee, and fill beverage cups
• Function as the host/hostess of the cafe
• Manage the register, including all credit card and cash operations
• Ensure a balance of the register at the end of the shift or working period
• Keep area clean according to health regulations.
• Attend team briefings when relevant.
• Maintain a friendly, cheerful and courteous demeanor always.
• Ensure guest satisfaction by responding to guest inquiries with accurate information and a positive attitude.
• Promote hotel amenities and services to guests using personal knowledge and effective selling techniques.
• Welcome and effectively resolve guest questions, issues and complaints with supervisor assistance as needed.
• Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

• Must be able to move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing up to 10lbs without assistance.
• Must be able to work a varied schedule that may include evenings, nights, and weekends.
• Minimum of 21 years of age to serve alcoholic beverages.
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Previous experience in similar position in hospitality industry.
• Knowledge of local activities and attractions appropriate for restaurant clientele.
• Knowledge of Restaurant operations, its services, and facilities.
• Must possess basic computational ability.
• Must possess basic computer skills.
