Job summary

Crunchyroll is seeking a Video Playback Services Software Engineer III to advance secure, scalable video playback and content protection. You’ll design and build backend services, own end-to-end projects, and collaborate across product, QA, and other engineering teams to improve latency and reliability for streaming across devices.

You will work on on-call incident response and contribute to reviews, tests, and documentation while driving durable improvements in playback security and content

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience building backend services in production environments.
• Strong experience with backend languages such as TypeScript and Go.
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms like AWS or GCP.
• Understand video streaming fundamentals, APIs, backend service architecture, and operational realities of delivering playback at scale.
• Ability to independently own well-scoped projects from design to deployment.
• Experience or comfort with content protection, entitlement, and playback security concerns.
• Ability to debug moderate to complex service issues and improve systems through testing and observability.
• Excellent written and verbal communication across functions and stakeholders.
• Motivated by improving delivery velocity and operational coverage.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and improve backend services and APIs that support secure, reliable video playback.
• Take ownership of projects that improve content protection and security services, playback latency, streaming security, content publishing, and avails testing.
• Deliver well-scoped projects from design through deployment, balancing speed, quality, and long-term maintainability.
• Collaborate with product, QA, and adjacent engineering teams to ship high-quality features and operational improvements.
• Strengthen the team’s ability to support and evolve content protection and security-related systems.
• Participate in on-call and incident response, expanding coverage and improving response effectiveness.
• Debug and resolve production issues related to video delivery, entitlement, configuration, service health, or content protection flows.
• Contribute to code reviews, design discussions, testing practices, and technical documentation.
• Identify technical risks and dependency gaps and drive them to closure.
• Help increase delivery velocity by contributing pragmatic solutions and durable service improvements.
