Elevate is seeking a California-based Litigation Attorney with 4-5 years of relevant experience to join its integrated law firm team. The successful candidate will primarily support defense of litigation matters, particularly negligence actions, for utility-sector customers. The attorney will also assist with a broad range of commercial and civil litigation matters as team needs and capacity permit. This is an opportunity for a practical, adaptable lawyer to manage meaningful portions of matters while working collaboratively with experienced litigators, legal operations professionals, and customer legal teams.
This position is expected to be fully remote, but requires an attorney based in California in the event in-person appearances may be necessary.
Specifically, the Attorney will
- Manage assigned litigation matters from initial assessment through resolution, working under appropriate partner supervision.
- Support utility-related disputes, including personal injury, property damage, subrogation and recovery claims, affirmative litigation, subpoena matters, and other complex civil disputes.
- Investigate claims, analyze facts and legal issues, assess exposure, and develop practical case strategies.
- Draft and revise pleadings, motions, briefs, written discovery, discovery responses, legal memoranda, settlement documents, and case-management reports.
- Take and defend depositions; prepare fact and corporate witnesses for deposition; and participate in hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and trials as appropriate.
- Manage discovery, document review, custodian outreach, expert coordination, and compliance with litigation holds and production obligations.
- Communicate directly and professionally with customers, opposing counsel, witnesses, experts, vendors, and internal teams.
- Maintain accurate calendars, budgets, matter plans, status reports, and risk assessments while meeting court and customer deadlines.
- Support other commercial and civil litigation matters based on business needs and available capacity.
Experience
- 4+ years of substantive litigation experience in a law firm, in-house legal department, or comparable setting.
- Demonstrated experience handling multiple phases of litigation, including pleadings, fact development, written discovery, depositions, motion practice, settlement, and case management.
- Strong knowledge of California civil procedure, court rules, and litigation practice.
- Prior representation of electric, gas, water, telecommunications, or other regulated utilities a plus.
Skills for Success
- Strong knowledge of California civil procedure, court rules, and litigation practice.
- Excellent legal research, analytical, drafting, and oral communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple matters and competing deadlines with sound judgment and limited day-to-day supervision.
Technical Skills
- Familiarity with legal technology, matter-management systems, eDiscovery tools, and process improvement.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
- Active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California.
Compensation
- US national salary range: $125,000-140,000, based on job-related skills, experience, level, and location. In addition, Elevate offers full-time employees a comprehensive benefits package and PTO.
