Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Kansas City, MO is hiring an Assistant Substation Engineer to assist the project team in preparing design deliverables for high-voltage substations from 13kV to 765kV. You will work under supervision to adapt designs per budget, factors, and client needs.

You will help develop design packages, perform electrical studies, and prepare calculations while supporting field inspections and client communications. A strong engineering foundation and teamwork are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field; ABET accreditation preferred.
• Internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 strongly preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
• Proficiency with standard engineering techniques and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Assists in the design of substation projects from concept through completion.
• Supports development of substation design packages including physical arrangement, protective relaying and control, grounding, lightning analysis, lighting and security.
• Assists in substation calculations (insulation, AC/DC systems, voltage drop, cable sizing, conduit fill).
• Prepares design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specs, BOMs, and other deliverables.
• Applies IEEE, NESC, and industry standards and procedures.
• Assists with field inspections of substation facilities.
• Contributes to project data, client presentations, reports and visualizations.
• Helps resolve issues and adheres to project schedules.
• Works with QA/QC guidelines to ensure client satisfaction.
