Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Assistant Substation Engineer to support design deliverables for high-voltage substations (13kV–765kV). You will work under a licensed PE to assist the project team through design and construction phases in Akron, OH, adapting plans to budget, factors, and client needs.

You will help with design packages, calculations, sketches, and documentation while ensuring QA/QC compliance and timely delivery.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or related ABET-accredited program or related engineering technology with FE completion.
Prior internship/consulting experience preferred.
EIT certification preferred.
Basic knowledge of standard engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office).
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Demonstrated critical thinking and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

Assist in design of substation projects from conceptual phase through completion.
Prepare substation design packages including physical arrangement, protective relaying, control and electrical studies.
Develop substation calculations like insulation, voltage drop, cable sizing and conduit fill.
Assist with design sketches, cost estimates, BOMs and other deliverables.
Apply IEEE, NESC and industry standards; assist with field inspections.
Support client presentations, reports and visualizations to show results and status.
