Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Saint Louis, MO is seeking an Assistant Substation Engineer to assist senior staff in delivering design deliverables for high-voltage substations (13kV–765kV). You will work with the project team through design and construction, adapting plans to budget and client needs.

You will help prepare design packages, calculations, sketches, and BOMs, and support field inspections and client presentations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field from a recognized, accredited program required.
• ABET accreditation strongly preferred.
• Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
• Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
• Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
• Basic knowledge in standard engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
• Desire to work in a collaborative team environment.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
• Engineers in Training (EIT) Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the design of substation projects from conceptual phase through completion.
• Assist in the preparation and development of substation design packages including layout, protective relaying and control, grounding studies, and lighting and security.
• Develop substation calculations including insulation, station service, DC systems, and battery sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing, and conduit fill.
• Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specifications, BOM, and other required deliverables.
• Apply basic knowledge of IEEE, NESC, and other industry standards.
• Assist with field inspections for substation facilities on public and private utility systems.
• Research and compile project-related data for managers.
• Assist with client presentations, reports, and visualizations of results and status.
• Identify and help resolve issues; adhere to project schedule.
• Work with the team to ensure QA/QC and client satisfaction.
• Perform other duties and comply with policies.
