Job summary

Safeway is seeking an Assistant Store Director to partner with the Store Director in day-to-day operations and to assume store leadership in their absence. The role focuses on directing others, managing the enterprise, and executing staffing decisions while ensuring exceptional customer service and store performance.

The candidate will oversee front-end operations, labor forecasting, cost controls, merchandising, safety, and compliance, while mentoring staff and maintaining positive relations

Qualifications

• Four or more years retail or managerial experience required.
• Retail grocery experience preferred.
• High School Diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred.
• Strong planning and organizational skills; strong math and analytical skills.
• Demonstrated prior customer service and supervisory skills or related experience.
• Strong understanding of overall retail store operations.
• Strong leadership and communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Computer literate.

Responsibilities

• Overall management responsibility for the operation of a retail grocery store during absence of the Store Director, including store performance, control of cash, inventory and security, customer service, and management of staff.
• Primarily responsible for operation of the store’s Front End, including supervising the front end manager and directing, disciplining and evaluating the performance of the front end clerks.
• Forecast, schedule, and monitor labor to be consistent with store sales and productivity guidelines and wage budgets; create action plan to address cost control issues.
• Communicate sales goals, department performance and sales opportunities with staff to ensure positive results.
• Forecast and monitor labor to align with sales goals and budgets; develop cost-control action plans.
• Support Store Director with development and direction in the execution of strategies to improve product placement and appearance.
• Manage display accuracy and appearance to implement promotions; ensure in-stock conditions.
• Oversee and manage handling of cash and accounting; ensure store is secured.
• Maintain positive working relationships with direct reports, peers, supervisors, suppliers, and customers; handle difficult situations.
• Motivate others to perform the job and work towards common objectives; adhere to company policies and set a positive example.
• Interview and select applicants for hire and promotion; participate in disciplinary actions up to termination.
• Maintain the Safety Program including overseeing compliance with the Company’s safety standards and Hazardous Waste Program.
