Job summary

University of Massachusetts Amherst, Mt Ida Dining, is seeking an Assistant Foods Manager to supervise one or more food-service areas, overseeing food preparation, service, and inventory. You will train staff, manage purchasing and records, and ensure sanitation and quality standards are met in a high-volume setting.

The role is onsite in Newton, full-time with two-shift coverage and weekend potential. Experience in food-service management, ServSafe-type certification, and strong leadership are

Qualifications

• Five (5) years of full-time or equivalent part-time food-service experience in a hotel, restaurant, cafeteria, or institutional setting.
• Certified as a food handler within six months of appointment start date (e.g., ServSafe).
• Knowledge of high-volume food preparation, service, sanitation, and cash handling.

Responsibilities

• Participate in determining material and labor needs and menu planning.
• Supervise and participate in production and service of foods and beverages to meet standards.
• Ensure cleanliness, sanitation, and proper maintenance of areas and equipment.
• Manage purchasing, receiving, storage, and periodic inventories.
• Maintain records of food served, staff hours, and sales/customer counts.
• Oversee cash handling and operation of cash registers per university policies.
• Develop procedures to minimize operating costs and communicate them to staff.
• Respond to customer complaints as necessary.
• Train and supervise employees, including hiring and assignments.
• Act as unit manager during absences and cover weekends as needed.

Education

Diploma or certificate in Home Economics, Culinary Arts, Food Services or Food Trades
