Job Summary

Responsible for managing reporting APPs and APP supervisors, including activities related to patient care, service line development, quality improvement, strategic planning, and policy enforcement. Ensures APP clinical work adheres to scope of practice and hospital protocols. Assesses staffing effectiveness, skill mix, and develops responsive staffing systems. Mentors and coaches APPs, handles administrative duties such as hiring, onboarding, performance evaluations, OPPE/FPPE, and represents APPs to external review agencies like the Joint Commission.

The position is typically 50% administrative and 50% clinical within the area of expertise, or as directed by the APP Director or VP of APP Services.

This is a 40-hour position that may include off-shift hours, weekends, and holidays as required. It provides leadership to APPs within the designated specialty, with potential for role expansion based on organizational needs.

Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with leadership to identify growth opportunities and process improvements; participate in meetings and committees as requested.
  • Evaluate APP workforce needs and approve staffing requests.
  • Work with the APP Director on recruitment, retention, and recognition initiatives.
  • Monitor financial metrics such as billing, reimbursement, productivity, and utilization.
  • Oversee CE/CME policies and expenses.
  • Develop peer review and quality metrics; assist with chart reviews and professional evaluations.
  • Develop and manage FPPE in collaboration with physician leadership.
  • Manage service line changes through effective communication; oversee clinical training, orientation, billing, and coding education.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, coaching, and disciplinary actions as needed, gathering feedback from interdisciplinary teams.
  • Oversee scheduling and coordinate with APP Supervisors on staffing adjustments.
  • Clinically work in 50% of the time in the designated area of expertise, or as assigned.

Supervision

  • The APP Manager reports to the relevant service line APP Director and physician leader; collaborates with physicians during clinical duties.

Supervision Exercised

  • Provides administrative supervision over APPs within the assigned areas.

Candidate Requirements

Physician Assistant:

  • Licensed in Michigan, certified by NCCPA, with Controlled Substance License, DEA registration, BLS, and 5+ years of clinical experience in a relevant specialty, plus 2 years of leadership experience.

Nurse Practitioner:

  • Licensed in Michigan, certified, with DEA registration, BLS, and 5+ years of clinical experience in a relevant specialty, plus 2 years of leadership experience.
