Job description

Job Summary

Responsible for managing reporting APPs and APP supervisors, including activities related to patient care, service line development, quality improvement, strategic planning, protocol or policy enforcement, and APP clinical work within scope or adherence to the Hospital Playbook. Assesses staffing effectiveness, experience, skill mix, and develops staffing systems responsive to patient volume and acuity. Mentors, coaches, and manages administrative duties such as hiring, onboarding, orientation, performance evaluations, OPPE/FPPE, etc. Represents APPs to external review agencies like the Joint Commission and American College of Surgeons.

The position is typically 50% administrative and 50% clinical, as determined by the APP Director or VP of APP Services.

Note: This is a 40-hour position, which may include off-shifts, weekends, and holidays. The role provides leadership within the specialty service(s) with potential expansion to other APP teams based on organizational needs.

Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with leadership to identify clinical growth and process improvements. Participate in meetings as requested.
  • Evaluate APP workforce needs, approve staffing requests, and work with leadership on recruitment and retention.
  • Monitor financial metrics like billing, reimbursement, productivity, and utilization.
  • Oversee CE/CME policies and expenses.
  • Develop peer review and quality metrics; assist with chart reviews for professional evaluations.
  • Develop FPPE in collaboration with physician leadership.
  • Manage service line changes, communication, and APP education programs.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, coaching, and disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Oversee scheduling and coordinate with APP Supervisors.
  • Work clinically 50% of the time in your area of expertise or as directed.

Supervision

  • The APP Manager reports to the APP Director and physician leader, collaborating on clinical duties.

Supervision Exercised

  • Administrative supervision over APPs in assigned areas.

Candidate Requirements

Physician Assistant:

  • License, certification, DEA registration, BLS, 5+ years clinical and 2+ years leadership experience in Michigan.

Nurse Practitioner:

  • License, certification, DEA registration, BLS, 5+ years clinical and 2+ years leadership experience in Michigan.
