Job summary

McFarland Johnson Inc. (MJ) is seeking a Resident Engineer to oversee Northeast airport construction projects, including runway, taxiway, and apron work. You’ll work with airport clients, contractors, and MJ teams across multiple airports in the Northeast and Vermont region.

Qualifications

• 4–12 years of experience in construction inspection, construction engineering, resident engineering, or related field.
• Experience with civil infrastructure construction including pavement, grading, drainage, utilities, or similar work.
• Airport or highway construction experience preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and construction contract documents.
• Familiarity with FAA or state DOT construction requirements preferred.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with clients, contractors, and project teams.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and sound judgment in the field.
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline preferred.
• PE registration, EIT certification, or applicable inspection certifications are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Provide on-site construction oversight to verify work complies with project plans, specs, and contract requirements.
• Coordinate with contractors, airport staff, inspection personnel, and MJ's project managers and design teams.
• Monitor construction progress, workmanship, schedules, and material testing.
• Maintain daily field reports, photographs, quantity measurements, and other project records.
• Review contractor payment quantities and assist with payment recommendations.
• Support the review and coordination of RFIs, submittals, and change orders.
• Identify construction issues and work with the project team to develop practical solutions.
• Help coordinate construction activities and phasing around ongoing airport operations.
• Participate in progress meetings and support punch lists, final inspections, and project closeout.
