Job summary

Gusto is seeking a highly technical, customer-facing engineer to own the discovery, scope, and delivery of complex agentic AI solutions for our Payroll/Tax domain. You will work with stakeholders to move from problem discovery to production-ready agents and multi-agent systems, embedding with clients to ensure live, measurable impact.

Qualifications

• 5+ years hands-on experience in a customer-facing technical role.
• Proven track record of shipping production systems in ambiguous, client-facing environments.
• Experience with agentic workflows and patterns like MCP or function-calling.
• Deep technical discovery skills in ambiguous contexts.
• Ability to scope technical solutions and justify a subscription business case.
• Proven ability to present to engineers and executive sponsors.
• Entrepreneurial, with strong client empathy.

Responsibilities

• Scope & Qualify opportunities early with Sales; own scoping of compliance.
• Define requirements for Sales, Product, and Engineering alignment.
• Prove It First with a working proof-of-concept when needed; tailor to engagement level.
• Make the Business Case translating deployments into subscription value (hours saved, risk reduced).
• Own the Build by embedding with clients and delivering production-grade code.
• Clear the Blockers by diagnosing data issues and jurisdiction mapping.
• Bridge the Gap between technical teams and stakeholders as requirements evolve.
• Own the Handoff and runbooks for Client Success to operate independently.
• Close the Loop feeding insights back into product and go-to-market strategy.
• Create Implementation Playbooks for recurring deployments.
