Job summary

Groundswell seeks an experienced AI engineer to own AI-enabled capabilities from discovery through deployment. You will lead requirements with business and technical stakeholders, select the right AI pattern, and ensure the solution is practical, measurable, and maintainable across client environments.

You will mentor peers, maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of models and tooling, and balance accuracy with cost and latency.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building and shipping production software.
• Hands-on experience building applications that integrate large language models (prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, structured extraction, tool use, agent patterns).
• Ability to own a capability end to end from ambiguous requirement to production.
• Experience evaluating AI system quality with metrics and deployment decisions.
• Strong programming ability in Python/TypeScript/SQL across full app.
• Ability to lead requirements conversations with non-technical stakeholders.
• Explain tradeoffs between accuracy, cost, latency and complexity.
• Excellent written communication for client-facing docs and design rationale.
• Willingness to teach and mentor others.
• U.S. Citizenship required for client engagements.

Responsibilities

• Lead requirements conversations with business and technical stakeholders covering workflow and success criteria.
• Define technical approach and defend AI pattern choice (extraction, classification, summarization, retrieval, agentic).
• Recommend against AI when simpler solutions suffice (rules, processes, interfaces).
• Define measurable success criteria before building (accuracy targets, human review thresholds, acceptance conditions).
• Build complete capability end-to-end including prompts, retrieval design, APIs, data handling, error states, UI.
• Create evaluation sets from real data and measure results; iterate based on evidence.
• Make architecture decisions considering quality, cost, latency, security, and authorization.
• Operationalize capabilities in client environments with governance, logging, and drift monitoring.
• Mentor engineers new to AI through code review and pairing.
• Maintain current knowledge of models, tooling, and reusable patterns.
