Job summary

The City of Decatur is seeking a dedicated E911 Communications Officer to monitor city service radios, answer calls, and dispatch emergency services around the clock. You will operate radios, telephones, an alarm board and in-house systems to process incidents, reports and citations.

Requirements include a HS Diploma or equivalent, ability to communicate clearly under pressure, and readiness to work rotating shifts. Training for certification and background checks are required.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or equivalent.
• Knowledge of or ability to learn public safety terminology and procedures.
• Ability to speak clearly and effectively over telephone and radio.
• Quick, sound decisions during crisis situations.
• Accurate typing and legible handwritten material.
• Willingness to work rotating shifts and pass background checks.

Responsibilities

• Answers emergency and non-emergency calls; obtains vital information and refers callers to appropriate departments.
• Operates a two-way radio system to support officers and dispatches personnel to incidents.
• Monitors area radio traffic and informs City personnel of relevant information.
• Maintains logs, information cards, tapes and other records daily.
• Operates GCIC/NCIC computer and enters information on criminal histories, vehicles, and related data.
• Uses in-house system to process incident reports, citations and warrants.
• Handles payments for fines and issues receipts; supports court processes as needed.
