Job description

The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) provides a vibrant and nurturing environment for staff and students to carry out inter-disciplinary research in key areas such as Computational Materials Science, Characterisation Materials Science, Defence Composite Materials, Functional Composite Materials, Energy, Nanomaterials, Low Dimensional Materials, Biomaterials Materials, Biological Materials, Bioinspired Materials and Sustainable Materials.

The Research Fellow will undertake advanced research in the field of quantum materials. The successful candidate will be responsible for the controlled synthesis and characterization of high-quality quantum materials, as well as the fabrication of nanoscale or microscale semiconducting, superconducting, or spintronic devices for quantum sensing applications. The role also includes the supervision and mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students.

Key Responsibilities
  • The candidate will be part of the 2D materials group focus devices of quantum materials.
  • The successful candidate will be thus part of an exceptional collaborative environment consisting of scientists, postdocs and PhD students with expertise in nanomaterials, spectroscopy, STEM, and theoretical modelling.
  • Characterization of quantum materials with AFM, XPS, XRD, Raman, PL
  • STEM-HAADF and nanofabrication.
  • Investigation of electronic and optical properties of novel materials.
Job Requirements
  • PhD in Physics, Nanotechnology, Chemistry, Materials Science or related field.
  • Relevant experience in 2D materials synthesis methods (like CVD, MBE, PLD), Raman spectroscopy, and nanofabrication of devices.
  • Familiarity with advanced materials synthesis techniques such as CVD, CVT, and MOCVD for quantum materials and nano alloys.
  • Characterization expertise in techniques like AFM, XPS, XRD, Raman, and PL, along with engagement in STEM-HAADF and nanofabrication, is essential.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong foundation in solid-state physics.
  • Able to work effectively as part of an esteemed collaborative team of scientists, postdocs, and PhD students.
