Role Context
The Senior Geotechnical Engineer – Infrastructure will lead geotechnical engineering input across major development and transportation projects in Riyadh. The role supports technical decision‑making for underground works, excavations, foundations, earth structures, retaining systems and challenging ground conditions. By reviewing investigations, validating design assumptions, managing geotechnical risks and guiding technical teams, the position helps ensure that infrastructure solutions are safe, buildable, compliant, cost‑effective and suitable for long‑term performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead geotechnical engineering teams and coordinate with design consultants, project management, construction management and multidisciplinary engineering groups.
- Deliver technical guidance for tunnels, deep excavations, diaphragm walls, retaining systems, foundations, ground improvement, slope stability and related infrastructure projects.
- Review geotechnical designs, earth structures, urban excavations, mechanically stabilized earth walls and foundation systems for compliance with project requirements.
- Assess subsurface investigation programs, site exploration plans, field testing strategies, laboratory testing requirements and investigation methodologies.
- Conduct and oversee field investigations, geotechnical assessments, sampling programs, soil classification activities and technical evaluations.
- Review soil and rock properties, groundwater conditions, geotechnical parameters, stratigraphy, ground behaviour and design assumptions.
- Perform and review analyses for shallow foundations, deep foundations, piles, retaining structures, earth pressures, ground improvement, liquefaction, lateral spreading and seismic ground deformation.
- Evaluate grading, drainage, slope stability, seepage, liquefaction and geosynthetic design considerations for infrastructure projects.
- Select and apply suitable geotechnical engineering methods, techniques, design criteria, procedures and analysis approaches.
- Review technical proposals, bids, geotechnical submissions, investigation reports, design calculations and construction‑related recommendations.
- Provide technical recommendations that support project planning, design development, risk reduction, procurement, construction sequencing and delivery decisions.
- Ensure quality assurance and quality control procedures are applied across geotechnical studies, calculations, reports, drawings and design recommendations.
- Identify geotechnical risks early and support mitigation plans related to ground conditions, settlement, excavation stability, groundwater, seismic behaviour and constructability.
- Prepare, review and consolidate technical reports, engineering assessments, design notes, review comments and geotechnical recommendations.
- Mentor geotechnical engineers and support professional development, technical consistency and high‑quality engineering delivery.
- Coordinate with clients, stakeholders, consultants, contractors and project teams on geotechnical matters.
- Support construction teams with geotechnical clarifications, technical reviews, field issues and practical engineering solutions during delivery.
- Maintain clear documentation of geotechnical assumptions, technical decisions, risks, review comments and lessons learned.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum 15 years of relevant experience on major civil, infrastructure, underground, transportation, rail, metro, or construction projects.
- Proven experience in geotechnical investigations, interpretation, design review and technical delivery for complex infrastructure works.
- Strong background in shallow foundations, deep foundations, piles, retaining walls, tunnels, diaphragm walls, urban excavations and related civil infrastructure.
- Comprehensive knowledge of geotechnical engineering practices, industry standards, regulatory requirements and design procedures.
- Ability to review subsurface investigation reports, geotechnical models, design calculations, slope stability assessments, foundation designs and technical recommendations.
- Proficiency in geotechnical analysis software such as gINT, PLAXIS, Slope/W, Seep/W, Piglet or equivalent platforms.
- Demonstrated experience leading and managing geotechnical engineering teams.
- Strong understanding of project management, client coordination, engineering reporting, risk management and stakeholder engagement.
- Previous GCC project experience is preferred, with Saudi Arabia experience highly advantageous.
- Experience on railway, metro, transit, transportation infrastructure, underground works or complex civil programs is preferred.
- Professional Engineer, Chartered Engineer or equivalent professional registration is advantageous.
- Strong leadership, mentoring, technical review, analytical and problem‑solving capability.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare clear technical reports and present recommendations confidently.
- Practical ability to balance safety, constructability, durability, schedule, cost and long‑term asset performance.
