Role Context

The Geotechnical Engineer will establish the ground engineering basis needed for safe, economical, and durable infrastructure design. The position converts borehole records, CPT data, laboratory testing, geological information, groundwater observations, and site investigations into reliable design parameters and engineering recommendations. Working across airport and infrastructure disciplines, the engineer will help control risks associated with settlement, bearing capacity, unstable slopes, weak subgrades, groundwater, excavation, and variable ground conditions before they create significant construction or asset-performance problems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret geotechnical investigation reports, borehole logs, CPT results, laboratory testing, geological records, groundwater information, and other site investigation data.
  • Develop geotechnical assessments, engineering calculations, design reports, specifications, criteria, and technical recommendations.
  • Establish appropriate soil and rock engineering parameters based on investigation results, laboratory data, geological conditions, and project requirements.
  • Perform and review bearing capacity, settlement, differential settlement, slope stability, earth pressure, excavation, and groundwater analyses.
  • Provide geotechnical design input for shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, embankments, slopes, pavements, earthworks, utilities, and underground infrastructure.
  • Review existing investigation coverage and identify gaps, inconsistencies, uncertainties, and additional data required to support reliable design.
  • Define supplementary investigation requirements including boreholes, trial pits, CPTs, groundwater monitoring, field investigations, and laboratory testing.
  • Prepare and review geotechnical design criteria and confirm engineering assumptions remain appropriate as additional information becomes available.
  • Review consultant and contractor geotechnical calculations, drawings, reports, specifications, and technical submissions.
  • Evaluate foundation recommendations for buildings, airport facilities, infrastructure structures, and other significant assets.
  • Assess pavement subgrade conditions, CBR values, support characteristics, and geotechnical parameters used for airfield and roadway pavement design.
  • Develop recommendations for engineered fill, capping layers, earthworks, subgrade treatment, soil stabilization and ground improvement.
  • Assess alternative ground improvement methods against actual ground conditions, design loads, performance criteria, constructability, and long-term requirements.
  • Review retaining wall, embankment, slope, excavation support, and temporary works proposals from a geotechnical perspective.
  • Assess groundwater conditions and develop recommendations covering seepage, dewatering, drainage, uplift, and groundwater control.
  • Coordinate geotechnical requirements associated with tunnels, culverts, drainage structures, utility corridors, foundations, and other below-ground assets.
  • Provide technical input to value engineering exercises involving foundation systems, construction methods, alternative materials, and ground treatment solutions.
  • Evaluate contractor proposals and specialist subcontractor submissions for compliance with approved geotechnical design requirements.
  • Prepare technical responses to RFIs, Technical Queries, Design Change Requests, and engineering clarifications.
  • Investigate unforeseen ground conditions identified during construction and develop technically appropriate recommendations.
  • Review geotechnical NCRs and advise on corrective actions where field conditions or construction outcomes deviate from design requirements.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary design reviews, constructability assessments, technical workshops, and engineering coordination meetings.
  • Coordinate with civil, structural, pavement, utilities, drainage, and infrastructure engineers to integrate geotechnical requirements into overall designs.
  • Provide construction teams with technical clarification regarding interpretation and implementation of approved geotechnical requirements.
  • Maintain geotechnical risk assessments and identify potential effects on design, construction methodology, cost, schedule, and long-term asset performance.
  • Support geotechnical engineering for runways, taxiways, aprons, roads, airfield pavements, drainage, utilities, and external infrastructure.
  • Assess subgrade and foundation conditions for critical airport pavement systems and recommend treatment for weak or variable ground.
  • Evaluate settlement, bearing capacity, differential movement, and stability risks affecting airport infrastructure.
  • Review geotechnical requirements for fuel systems, underground utilities, culverts, drainage networks, and major foundation systems.
  • Ensure all geotechnical deliverables comply with Client specifications, project requirements, applicable codes, and recognized international engineering standards.
