Role Context
The Material Engineer will provide the technical control needed to ensure construction materials entering the project are suitable, approved, correctly tested, and fully traceable before incorporation into permanent works. Working across airport pavements, roads, utilities, drainage, and external infrastructure, the engineer will connect design specifications with procurement, laboratory verification, delivery inspections, storage controls, and field acceptance. Effective material management will help prevent non-compliant installations, reduce rework, protect pavement and infrastructure performance, and maintain construction progress.
Key Responsibilities
- Review drawings, technical specifications, material schedules, design requirements, and applicable standards to establish acceptance criteria.
- Evaluate Material Submittals, Material Approval Requests, technical submissions, and supporting documentation before recommending materials for project use.
- Verify proposed products and materials against approved designs, Client requirements, specifications, and relevant international standards.
- Review manufacturers ' technical data, certificates of conformity, test certificates, product literature, warranties, and supporting compliance evidence.
- Coordinate material requirements and approval status with Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and QA and QC teams.
- Plan and coordinate sampling, inspections, laboratory testing, and field testing in accordance with approved Inspection and Test Plans.
- Ensure required tests are undertaken by approved laboratories using appropriate procedures and frequencies.
- Review laboratory and field results and verify compliance with specified acceptance limits before material approval or use.
- Inspect delivered materials for condition, quantity, identification, certification, specification compliance, and consistency with approved submissions.
- Monitor storage, handling, preservation, segregation, and environmental protection of construction materials.
- Maintain material approval registers, testing logs, inspection records, status trackers, and other controlled quality information.
- Coordinate with Procurement and Construction teams to identify material approval or delivery constraints that could affect scheduled works.
- Identify material-related risks affecting quality, cost, construction sequencing, or project milestones and recommend appropriate mitigation.
- Support resolution of Technical Queries, RFIs, NCRs, rejected materials, failed tests, and other material-related site issues.
- Evaluate proposed material substitutions and alternatives and provide technically supported recommendations.
- Maintain traceability from procurement and manufacture through delivery, testing, installation, and final acceptance.
- Coordinate directly with manufacturers, suppliers, contractors, and testing laboratories regarding compliance, documentation, testing, and warranties.
- Support Client, Consultant, and authority audits and inspections by maintaining complete and readily retrievable material records.
- Provide construction teams with technical guidance regarding material selection, application, installation requirements, and acceptance criteria.
- Analyze testing and inspection trends to identify recurring material problems and recommend corrective or preventive measures.
- Participate in material coordination meetings, technical reviews, quality meetings, and multidisciplinary project discussions.
- Prepare material status reports and provide accurate information for quality and construction progress reporting.
- Ensure material inspection, sampling, testing, storage, and handling activities comply with project HSE requirements.
- Review and monitor aggregates, concrete, asphalt, soils, geosynthetics, drainage products, pavement materials, and utility construction materials.
- Coordinate acceptance testing for sub-base, base course, asphalt, concrete, aggregates, soil, and other critical civil materials.
- Verify materials incorporated into runways, taxiways, aprons, roads, utilities, and external works satisfy applicable project and aviation requirements.
- Review material requirements and performance characteristics associated with airfield pavement systems.
- Coordinate specialist laboratory activities required for airport and major infrastructure construction.
- Verify material compliance with applicable ASTM, AASHTO, BS-EN, FAA, ICAO, and project-specific requirements.
- Maintain comprehensive traceability and quality records for critical airfield pavement and infrastructure materials through project closeout.
Ideal Profile
A Bachelor 's Degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related discipline is required, together with at least 8 years of relevant experience in construction materials engineering, testing, inspection, and quality control. Candidates should have practical knowledge of concrete, asphalt, aggregates, soils, pavement materials, geosynthetics, and other products used in major civil infrastructure. Experience on airport, airfield, road, utility, or large-scale infrastructure developments is preferred, with direct airfield exposure providing a significant advantage. The successful engineer should be experienced in Material Submittals, MARs, MIRs, ITPs, NCRs, RFIs, laboratory reports, inspection records, and technical documentation. Strong understanding of material approval, sampling, testing, storage, handling, preservation, and traceability processes is essential. Working knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, BS-EN, and other applicable international material standards is expected. Familiarity with FAA and ICAO requirements relevant to airport infrastructure would further strengthen the candidate 's profile.
