Role Context
The Design Manager will work within the Planning and Design Management function, supporting the coordinated delivery of multidisciplinary infrastructure design across assigned projects, packages, or asset scopes. The role will act as a central point of coordination between design consultants, internal technical teams, support functions, stakeholders, and delivery teams. The position will help maintain design quality, consistency, technical integration, and schedule performance throughout project development. By tracking submissions, resolving interfaces, managing approvals, and identifying design risks early, the Design Manager will support more predictable project delivery and reduce delays caused by incomplete or conflicting design information.
Key Responsibilities
- Support senior management and the Senior Design Manager in coordinating design delivery across all project stages.
- Manage multidisciplinary design activities across assigned infrastructure packages and asset scopes.
- Coordinate design consultants and technical teams to maintain integrated and compliant design outputs.
- Review design submissions for completeness, technical quality, coordination, and alignment with approved project requirements.
- Monitor design packages before formal approval and identify gaps requiring clarification or correction.
- Coordinate the timely review of drawings, reports, specifications, calculations, and other technical deliverables.
- Support resolution of design clashes and cross-disciplinary coordination issues.
- Track technical queries and ensure responsible parties provide timely responses.
- Identify constructability concerns during design development and coordinate practical resolutions.
- Maintain design trackers, action logs, registers, review comments, and approval records.
- Manage design workflows and ensure submissions progress through defined review and approval stages.
- Apply standardized design management procedures, templates, tools, and reporting methods.
- Monitor design progress against milestones, schedules, stage gates, and agreed delivery dates.
- Highlight design delays, incomplete submissions, or approval bottlenecks that may affect project delivery.
- Coordinate interfaces between civil, structural, architectural, utilities, mechanical, electrical, ICT, and other disciplines as applicable.
- Ensure interfaces between infrastructure systems and individual assets are clearly defined and coordinated.
- Support integration between design consultants, project teams, construction stakeholders, and specialist advisors.
- Identify design assumptions, dependencies, constraints, and technical risks.
- Maintain design risk registers and support development of practical mitigation measures.
- Escalate significant technical or schedule risks to senior management when required.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders to obtain timely design reviews and technical decisions.
- Coordinate with project support functions to maintain alignment between design, cost, schedule, and delivery requirements.
- Support communication between consultants, engineering teams, and project leadership.
- Ensure design information is distributed accurately and consistently to relevant stakeholders.
- Participate in design coordination meetings, technical workshops, and project review sessions.
- Record decisions, responsibilities, and required actions arising from design meetings.
- Follow up outstanding actions to ensure timely closure.
- Support design assurance activities throughout concept, preliminary, detailed, and construction design stages.
- Monitor consultant compliance with agreed scopes of work and deliverable requirements.
- Review design changes and assess potential effects on coordination, schedule, cost, and downstream activities.
- Support reporting on design progress, outstanding issues, approvals, and risks.
- Maintain accurate technical records to support governance, audits, and future project reference.
- Contribute to continuous improvement in design management procedures and project coordination practices.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in design coordination or design management roles.
- Proven experience working with multidisciplinary design consultants.
- Good understanding of design development stages and technical coordination requirements.
- Experience reviewing design submissions for quality, completeness, and interdisciplinary integration.
- Ability to coordinate consultants, technical teams, project stakeholders, and delivery functions.
- Strong understanding of infrastructure design interfaces and project delivery requirements.
- Experience maintaining design trackers, approval registers, action logs, and technical records.
- Ability to identify design risks, dependencies, assumptions, and constraints.
