Role Context
The Design Manager will operate within the Planning and Design Management stream and support the delivery of coordinated, technically robust design packages across multiple infrastructure workstreams. The position requires direct involvement in design reviews, consultant management, technical interfaces, approvals, risk tracking, and schedule performance. Its primary business impact is to reduce design delays, prevent coordination failures, improve submission quality, and maintain a clear path from design development through approval and downstream project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Support senior management and the Senior Design Manager with day-to-day control of multidisciplinary design delivery.
- Coordinate consultants, technical specialists, and internal project teams across assigned infrastructure packages.
- Ensure design outputs comply with approved briefs, project standards, technical requirements, budgets, and delivery programs.
- Review design submissions for completeness, coordination, technical quality, and readiness for formal approval.
- Identify incomplete, conflicting, or non-compliant design information before it affects downstream activities.
- Monitor design development across concept, preliminary, detailed, and subsequent project stages.
- Coordinate cross-disciplinary reviews to ensure civil, structural, utilities, transport, landscape, architectural, and other relevant systems remain integrated.
- Resolve design clashes and interface conflicts involving different disciplines, systems, assets, or packages.
- Coordinate responses to technical queries and ensure issues are progressed to clear and documented resolution.
- Support constructability reviews and identify design conditions that could create construction, access, sequencing, or operational difficulties.
- Maintain design trackers, submission registers, approval logs, action lists, technical records, and decision histories.
- Monitor consultant responses and ensure outstanding design actions are closed within agreed timeframes.
- Apply standardized design management procedures, templates, review workflows, and reporting methodologies.
- Track design progress against approved schedules, key milestones, and stage gate requirements.
- Highlight delayed submissions, unresolved technical issues, and approval risks to management.
- Coordinate dependencies between infrastructure systems, consultants, project teams, and external stakeholders.
- Manage design interfaces between separate packages to avoid gaps, duplication, or incompatible assumptions.
- Identify design assumptions, constraints, dependencies, and technical risks affecting delivery.
- Maintain visibility of design-related risks and support implementation of mitigation actions.
- Coordinate internal technical reviews and consolidate comments before issuing formal responses.
- Liaise with project teams and support functions to secure timely reviews, approvals, and decisions.
- Maintain clear communication between design consultants, management, stakeholders, and delivery teams.
- Support preparation of design status reports and management updates.
- Participate in design workshops, coordination meetings, technical reviews, and stage gate discussions.
- Ensure agreed design decisions are documented and communicated consistently.
- Monitor consultant performance against scope, schedule, and required quality standards.
- Escalate persistent design coordination issues that threaten project milestones or technical outcomes.
- Support value-focused design discussions where alternative approaches may improve delivery efficiency.
- Promote consistent information management and traceability across design documentation.
- Help maintain alignment between approved design intent and evolving project requirements.
