Role Context
The Civil Engineer - NATM supports the safe and technically compliant delivery of underground and infrastructure construction activities. Working directly with contractors, consultants, construction managers, client representatives, and site teams, the engineer helps resolve field issues before they affect quality, safety, schedule, or payment certification. The position combines hands‑on site supervision with technical coordination, progress monitoring, quality assurance, and construction sequencing.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate with the client, contractors, consultants, construction management teams, and other project stakeholders on technical and site-related matters.
- Attend construction coordination meetings and provide engineering input on issues affecting NATM and civil works.
- Review site preparation activities and temporary works for compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and contract requirements.
- Monitor excavation, structural, temporary support, and associated civil construction activities within assigned work areas.
- Verify that construction methods are appropriate for approved project requirements and site conditions.
- Identify technical conflicts between drawings, systems, interfaces, and construction activities and coordinate practical resolutions.
- Monitor contractor compliance with project health, safety, security, and environmental requirements.
- Enforce applicable safety procedures and raise concerns immediately when unsafe conditions or practices are observed.
- Maintain awareness of business‑critical construction scenarios where site safety or engineering decisions could affect project continuity.
- Conduct regular inspections of subcontractor work and evaluate workmanship against approved standards.
- Identify non‑compliant or defective work and coordinate appropriate corrective actions.
- Investigate discrepancies and technical problems that could affect the quality or progress of construction.
- Assist the Project Manager with supervision and coordination of assigned construction activities.
- Support development and implementation of construction sequencing in accordance with the Project Quality Plan.
- Monitor physical progress against planned activities and established construction schedules.
- Verify completed work and progress information used to support payment assessments.
- Participate in daily briefings with site team leaders to review progress, upcoming work, constraints, and potential delays.
- Anticipate schedule slippage by comparing planned activities with actual site performance.
- Recommend immediate corrective measures when deviations threaten planned completion dates.
- Work with construction teams to recover delays and prevent cumulative impacts on subsequent activities.
- Review interfaces between civil, structural, rail, utilities, MEP, and other project systems where relevant.
- Maintain clear site records covering inspections, progress, technical issues, corrective actions, and coordination matters.
- Support project reporting by providing accurate information about current site conditions and construction status.
- Coordinate quality requirements with project engineers, inspectors, contractors, and subcontractors.
- Participate in site walks, inspections, and technical discussions required to maintain efficient construction delivery.
Ideal Profile
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant industry experience.
- Practical understanding of NATM construction and underground civil works is highly valuable.
- Experience on rail, metro, transportation, infrastructure, tunneling, or major construction projects is preferred.
- Strong ability to read and interpret civil and structural drawings.
- Good understanding of interfaces between different construction systems and engineering disciplines.
- Experience supervising contractors and subcontractors on active construction sites.
- Working knowledge of temporary works, site preparation, inspection, and quality control procedures.
- Ability to identify construction discrepancies and coordinate workable technical solutions.
- Understanding of construction planning, sequencing, progress monitoring, and schedule recovery.
- Familiarity with project quality plans and quality assurance processes.
- Strong awareness of construction safety and site management requirements.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with clients, consultants, construction managers, and multidisciplinary project teams.
- GCC construction experience is preferred.
- Good communication and reporting skills for working in a complex project environment.
