Job summary

Kuehne+Nagel is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer in Portugal to own Java-based application development and shape the architecture of our logistics solutions. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive the full software lifecycle from concept to production.

The role requires strong Java expertise, architecture skills, and experience with modern toolchains. Flexible working hours and remote options are available as part of our IT organization.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• At least 6 years of experience as a Software Engineer or in a similar role.
• Strong experience in software architecture and Java development.
• Proficient with Maven, Jenkins, and Git; experience with IntelliJ IDEA, Docker, OpenShift, or AWS is a plus.
• Familiar with agile ways of working and proactive in improving processes.
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to quickly understand complex systems.
• Excellent English communication skills and a collaborative, knowledge-sharing mindset.

Responsibilities

• Take technical ownership of application development with a strong focus on Java.
• Design and evolve service-oriented architectures tailored to the logistics industry.
• Drive the full development lifecycle: ideation, design, prototyping, implementation, and production integration.
• Collaborate with product owners and domain experts across business units to align technical solutions with business needs.
• Continuously evaluate and integrate new tools, frameworks, and technologies to enhance system performance and maintainability.
• Advanced hands-on experience with Java technologies such as Spring Boot, JPA (Hibernate), JUnit, and Mockito, and it is good to have experience with Swing and/or SWT for desktop application development.
