Job summary

elGrocer is seeking a Lead Backend Engineer (Rails) to drive architecture, performance, and AI-enabled delivery tooling. You will own end-to-end backend design in a Rails-based platform transitioning from monolith to microservices, and you’ll sharpen AI agent workflows used by the team.

You’ll work as an individual contributor, collaborating with a Staff Engineer, shipping robust systems that scale with demand.

Qualifications

• 6-9 years of backend engineering experience in Rails production environments.
• Proven ability to design scalable systems and decompose a monolith.
• Hands-on experience with AI coding tools and workflows.
• Excellent written communication and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Own backend system design, API contracts, data modeling, and service decomposition.
• Lead evolution of the Rails monolith with incremental, safe refactors.
• Set and enforce backend code quality standards.
• Collaborate with Staff Engineer on architecture and delivery.
• Diagnose performance, scalability, and reliability bottlenecks in production.
