elGrocer is seeking a Lead Backend Engineer to own the architecture of a Rails-based platform as it evolves from a monolith to a decomposed service architecture. You will push for robust systems, guide code quality, and collaborate with a Staff Engineer to shape long-term strategy.

The role emphasizes deep ownership of backend delivery and AI tooling, with remote-first, async-friendly collaboration across a platform used widely in the Middle East.

Qualifications

• 6–9 years of backend engineering experience with Ruby on Rails production code.
• Strong architectural instincts and ability to design systems, not just features.
• Experience migrating from monolith to services without breaking live operations.
• Daily familiarity with AI coding tools and practical usage in workflows.
• Ability to ship with urgency while building with care and quality.

Responsibilities

• Design and deliver complex backend systems within a Rails platform, from APIs to data models.
• Lead ongoing monolith evolution and propose incremental service decompositions.
• Set and uphold backend code quality standards through design reviews and guidance.
• Collaborate with Staff Engineer on architectural decisions and implementation details.
• Diagnose performance bottlenecks and ensure scalable, reliable production systems.
• Own AI agent orchestration, refining Cursor/Claude/Copilot workflows and pipelines.
