Job summary

The Red Boats in Auckland Harbour is seeking a Bar Manager / Host to lead the onboard bar and host duties across harbour cruises, private charters and events. This fixed-term role offers approximately 25 hours per week, with training provided and a hands-on marine environment for the summer season.

Holds a Duty Manager License or LCQ, strong hospitality skills, and bar supervisory experience to deliver exceptional passenger experiences on board.

Responsibilities

• Manage onboard bar operations and hosting for cruises, charters and events.
• Provide excellent customer service and hospitality to all passengers.
• Operate POS and payment systems on board.
• Manage bar stock and restock requirements; keep areas clean and well presented.
• Ensure responsible service of alcohol and safety procedures on board.
• Coordinate with other crew and assist with vessel operations as needed.
• Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking; help prepare and reset vessels.

Bar Manager / Host – Auckland Harbour Cruises

Looking for something different from the usual hospitality job?

The Red Boats is looking for a confident, reliable and customer-focused Bar Manager / Host to join our team at Westhaven for the busy summer season.

This is a fixed-term position averaging 25 hours per week through to 1 April 2027, working onboard our Auckland Harbour cruises, private charters and events.

The role combines bar management and hosting with being part of our onboard crew. Previous marine or deckhand experience is not required – we can train the right person.

About the role

You’ll help deliver a great experience for our passengers while taking responsibility for the onboard bar and assisting with general vessel operations.

• Preparing, stocking and operating the onboard bar
• Providing excellent customer service and hosting passengers
• Responsible service of alcohol
• Managing bar stock and restocking requirements
• Operating POS and payment systems
• Coordinating other bar/host staff when required
• Welcoming passengers and assisting with boarding and disembarking
• Preparing and resetting vessels before and after cruises
• Keeping passenger and bar areas clean and well presented
• Assisting the skipper and crew with general onboard duties
• Learning basic deckhand duties, including handling lines and assisting with berthing
• Participating in vessel safety and emergency procedures

About you

We’re looking for someone who:

• Holds a Duty Managers License or LCQ
• Has strong hospitality and customer service skills
• Has bar experience, ideally with supervisory or management experience
• Is confident, friendly and professional with customers
• Is reliable, punctual and organised
• Can take initiative and remain calm when things get busy
• Is comfortable working in a hands-on environment
• Is willing to learn basic marine/deckhand duties
• Takes safety and responsible alcohol service seriously
• Previous boating experience is a bonus, but it is not essential.
• Training will be provided for the marine and deckhand aspects of the position.

Availability

This is a fixed-term summer position of approximately 25 hours per week ending 1 April 2027.

Due to the nature of our cruise operation, hours will be rostered across different days and times and may include evenings, weekends and public holidays.

You must be available throughout the busy Christmas and New Year holiday period, including weekends, evenings and public holidays as required.
