Job summary

Swapfiets in Amsterdam is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to own backend services for Subscription Management, solving complex domain problems and delivering reliable software with visible business impact.

You will design and build APIs and distributed systems using C#/.NET, SQL Server, Azure and Docker, mentor colleagues, enforce testing, CI/CD and observability, and shape production readiness.

Qualifications

• Several years of professional backend experience.
• Experience with C# and .NET.
• Experience designing APIs and distributed systems.
• Experience with relational databases, preferably SQL Server.
• Strong testing, CI/CD, observability and secure development practices.
• Experience operating production systems and investigating incidents.
• Experience with Azure and Docker.
• Interest in AI-enabled engineering tools and practical use.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain backend services for Subscription Management.
• Work on complex domain problems involving subscriptions, pricing, billing, payments and customer lifecycle changes.
• Translate business needs into practical and maintainable technical solutions.
• Own systems in production, including monitoring, incident support and improvements.
• Evolve the architecture to support future business requirements.
• Identify risks and communicate them early; collaborate with product, design and other teams.
• Contribute to technical standards and code quality through reviews and docs.

Hi, we are Swapfiets! We are on a mission to make cities more liveable by getting more people on bikes. To make sure our members can enjoy the ride, we take care of everything around their bike subscription. Subscription Management is at the heart of that experience. Our systems manage the subscription lifecycle, including changes, pricing, billing, payments and cancellations. We are continuing to evolve this domain, complete our migration from the legacy platform and build a strong foundation for the future. We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help us make that happen. You will work on complex problems, build reliable software and have a visible impact on our members and our business.

What you will do:

• Design, build and maintain backend services for Subscription Management.
• Work on complex domain problems involving subscriptions, pricing, billing, payments and customer lifecycle changes.
• Translate business needs into practical and maintainable technical solutions.
• Take ownership of the systems you build in production, including monitoring, operational improvements and incident support.
• Help evolve the architecture of Subscription Management to support future business requirements.
• Identify risks, dependencies and inconsistencies in requirements, and communicate them early.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, Data, Operations and other engineering teams.
• Contribute to technical standards, design discussions and improvements to the way we work.
• Support other engineers through mentoring, pairing and constructive code reviews.
• Communicate important technical decisions through design documents, presentations and other suitable channels.

The gear you need:

• Several years of professional experience building backend software.
• Strong experience with C# and .NET.
• Experience designing and building APIs and distributed systems.
• Experience with relational databases, preferably Microsoft SQL Server.
• A strong understanding of automated testing, CI/CD, observability and secure development.
• Experience operating software in production and investigating incidents.
• Experience working with Azure and Docker.
• You have hands-on experience with AI-enabled engineering tools, or you are a strong enthusiast who actively explores their practical use.
• You are eager to grow your AI skills and help colleagues grow theirs.
• The ability to work independently on complex problems and make sound technical decisions.
• Clear communication skills, both with technical and non-technical colleagues.
• A pragmatic mindset: you care about quality and long-term maintainability, while also delivering value incrementally.
• An interest in understanding complex business domains and improving them through software.

Nice to have for the ride:

• Experience with subscriptions, billing, invoicing, payments or Stripe.
• Experience with financial data or reconciliation.
• Experience with event-driven systems and asynchronous workflows.
• Experience migrating from legacy systems to modern services.
• Experience with infrastructure as code.
