Asialink Cargo & Packing Agency Sdn Bhd is seeking a Workshop Manager for a busy commercial vehicle workshop focusing on lorries and heavy trucks. You will lead technicians, oversee servicing, repairs, and inspections, and manage workshop costs and safety compliance.
The role requires solid leadership, strong knowledge of heavy vehicle systems, and the ability to optimize workflow and customer communications in a fast-paced environment.
Manage the day-to-day running of a commercial vehicle workshop specialising in lorries, trucks, trailers and heavy commercial vehicles. Lead the vehicle technician team, oversee truck maintenance, servicing, repairs and MOT/inspection work, control workshop workflow, parts inventory, vehicle safety, compliance and operational costs. Ensure all truck and lorry work is completed safely, on time, to manufacturer standards and within budget, while maintaining high service levels for fleet or retail customers.
Recruit, train, supervise and performance manage heavy vehicle technicians, fitters, apprentices and workshop support staff.
Allocate repair and service jobs for trucks, lorries and trailers; plan daily/weekly workloads and prioritise breakdowns, fleet emergency repairs and scheduled maintenance.
Hold team briefings, monitor technician productivity, coach staff and resolve staff issues.
Workshop Job Control & Vehicle Repair Oversight
Receive job requests for heavy commercial vehicles: routine servicing, engine repairs, gearbox, suspension, brakes, trailer work, accident damage and pre-inspection preparation.
Review job sheets, estimate labour and parts costs, quote customers/fleet managers and track vehicles from booking to handover.
Inspect completed truck and lorry work to verify quality; check faults are fully rectified before vehicle release.
Communicate job progress, delays and additional repair requirements to fleet managers and customers.
Health, Safety & Regulatory Compliance (Heavy Vehicle)
Enforce workshop safety rules, PPE and safe working practices for lifting heavy components, working under trucks, tyre fitting and use of workshop hoists.
Manage vehicle statutory inspections, roadworthiness requirements and keep all related documentation up to date.
Investigate accidents, near misses and vehicle defects; implement corrective actions.
Ensure compliance with local transport, occupational safety and environmental regulations for commercial vehicle repair.
Control stock of truck/lorry spare parts, filters, oils, tyres, brake components and consumables.
Liaise with parts suppliers, place orders, minimise stock shortages and control parts wastage.
Arrange routine servicing and calibration of workshop equipment: vehicle lifts, air tools, tyre machines, brake testers and diagnostic scanners for heavy vehicles.
Maintain clean, organised workshop, vehicle bays and storage areas.
Documentation, KPIs & Cost Management
Maintain accurate records: job cards, vehicle service history, parts usage, technician timesheets, inspection certificates and workshop reports.
Monitor workshop KPIs: labour utilisation, job turnaround time, rework rate, parts margin and workshop profitability.
Control workshop operating costs, identify cost saving opportunities and report performance to senior management.
Customer & Stakeholder Relations
Deal with fleet operators, haulage companies and retail truck owners; handle enquiries and customer complaints.
Work closely with service advisors, parts managers and suppliers.
Heavy vehicle / commercial vehicle trade qualification (lorry, truck, trailer or automotive heavy goods).
Proven workshop management or senior foreman experience within a truck, lorry or commercial vehicle workshop.
Strong technical knowledge of heavy vehicle systems: diesel engines, braking systems, air suspension, transmissions, trailers and commercial vehicle diagnostics.
Good understanding of heavy vehicle roadworthiness and inspection requirements.
Knowledge of workshop health and safety for heavy vehicle repair operations.
Ability to read job sheets, technical manuals and prepare repair estimates.
Strong leadership, team management, planning and problem-solving skills.
Basic computer skills: workshop management systems, job scheduling, spreadsheets and heavy vehicle diagnostic software.
Clear verbal and written communication to liaise with fleet customers and technicians.
Formal leadership, management or safety certification.
Experience managing fleet customer accounts.
Experience with commercial vehicle ERP / workshop job management software.
Knowledge of truck warranty processes.
On-site role in a busy commercial vehicle workshop environment with noise, grease, dust and vehicle fumes.
Will need to walk around workshop bays, inspect vehicles and sometimes bend/climb to check trucks and trailers.
Flexible hours may be required for emergency breakdown jobs, peak fleet maintenance periods or overtime cover.
PPE must be worn when in workshop areas.
