Job summary

Suanson Specialty Cakes in Kuala Lumpur seeks a Pastry Assistant (Bakery) to join our full-time team in Bangsar. You will support production of high-quality cakes and pastries, working alongside pastry chefs in a small team to develop skills and craftsmanship.

Responsibilities include prep, baking support, decoration, layering, hygiene, stock handling, and collaboration with front-of-house to ensure orders meet quality standards. Diploma in Pastry Arts is required; 2 years experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Diploma in Pastry Arts or equivalent required.
• 2 years of experience preferred, but not essential.
• Knowledge of baking techniques, ingredients and their properties.
• Strong food safety and hygiene practices relevant to bakery operations.
• Ability to follow recipes precisely and maintain consistency in quality.
• Excellent attention to detail with visually appealing results.
• Physical stamina for a warm, fast-paced kitchen.
• Creative mindset with passion for baking and decoration.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills, Willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

• Assist in preparation, mixing and portioning of cake batters, doughs and fillings according to recipes.
• Support baking process, monitor oven temperatures and ensure products are baked to perfection.
• Decorate cakes and pastries with buttercream, icing, chocolate ganache, and other methods.
• Prepare and assemble cake layers, fillings and toppings to meet quality standards.
• Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of pastry kitchen and equipment.
• Receive and store ingredients, monitor stock levels and report shortages.
• Assist development and testing of new pastry recipes and designs.
• Support packaging and presentation for delivery and retail.
• Follow food safety protocols at all times.
• Communicate with front-of-house regarding orders and customer feedback to improve craft.

The Role

We are currently seeking a motivated Pastry Assistant (Bakery) to join our team at Suanson Specialty Cakes. This is a full-time position based in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. In this role, you will play a vital part in supporting the production and preparation of our high-quality specialty cakes and pastry items. Working alongside experienced pastry chefs in our small team, you will contribute to maintaining our reputation for excellence while developing your expertise and honing your skills in pastry craftsmanship.

What you'll be doing

• Assisting in the preparation, mixing and portioning of cake batters, doughs and fillings according to established recipes and specifications
• Supporting the baking process, including monitoring oven temperatures and ensuring products are baked to perfection
• Decorating cakes and pastries in creative designs and innovate methods, using buttercream, icing, chocolate ganache, and others.
• Preparing and assembling cake layers, fillings and toppings to create finished products that meet quality standards
• Maintaining cleanliness and organisation of the pastry kitchen, including proper sanitisation of equipment, utensils and workstations and maintain proper hygiene at all times.
• Receiving and storing ingredients, monitoring stock levels and reporting shortages to management
• Assisting with the development and testing of new pastry recipes and specialty cake designs
• Supporting the packaging and presentation of finished cakes and pastries for delivery and retail
• Following food safety and hygiene protocols at all times to ensure the highest standards of food preparation
• Communicate with the front of house team regarding cake orders and feedback from customers to constantly grow and improve your craft.

What we're looking for

• Diploma in Pastry Arts or equivalent
• 2 years of experience preferred, but not essential.
• Knowledge of baking techniques, ingredients and their properties, and possession of good decorating skills
• Strong understanding of food safety and hygiene practices relevant to bakery operations
• Ability to follow recipes precisely and maintain consistency in product quality
• Excellent attention to detail with a commitment to producing visually appealing and delicious pastry items
• Physical stamina and the ability to work in a warm, fast-paced kitchen environment
• A creative mindset with a passion for baking, and pastry and cake decoration
• Strong teamwork and communication skills, with a willingness to learn and take direction from senior chefs
• Reliability, punctuality and a professional attitude towards work
• Self-motivated, proactive, responsible with a positive outlook and an attitude to constantly learn and improve
• A can-do, agile attitude necessary to thrive in a business environment
