Job summary

Basta & Company, a San Francisco CPA firm serving construction and real estate clients, is hiring a remote bookkeeper for a 100% remote, independent contractor role based in Mexico. You will review automated month-end closes, reconcile accounts, and discuss numbers with US clients.

Strong English and experience with AI-driven workflows are essential. We offer a fixed monthly retainer in USD, paid time off, and an annual profit-sharing bonus after 12 months.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of paid bookkeeping or accounting experience.
• Solid grasp of debits and credits, reconciliations, accruals and payroll.
• Advanced English (C1 or higher), on calls with US clients.

Responsibilities

• Review automated month-end close work in QuickBooks Online and Digits, and catch anomalies before client review.
• Reconcile bank and credit card accounts and tie out financial statements.
• Investigate discrepancies and determine root cause, not just fixes.
• Explain numbers to US business owners over Zoom and email in plain English.
• Contribute to building and improving AI and automation workflows.

We're a fully remote team, and we automate most of our month-end close with AI and modern tools. We don't need someone to key in transactions. We need sharp eyes, an analytical brain, and confident English.

What you'll do

• Review automated month-end close work in QuickBooks Online and Digits, and catch what doesn't look right before it goes to the client.
• Reconcile bank and credit card accounts and tie out the financials.
• Investigate discrepancies and figure out the why, not just the fix.
• Talk with US business owners over Zoom and email: walk them through their numbers in plain English.
• Help build and improve our AI and automation workflows.

What you bring

• 2+ years of paid bookkeeping or accounting experience. Internships and coursework don't count. This is not an entry-level role.
• Solid grasp of debits and credits, reconciliations, accruals and payroll.
• Advanced English (C1 or higher), spoken and written. You'll be on calls with US clients.
• Very comfortable with tech. You've used AI tools in real work.
• Self-managed and responsive, with regular overlap with US Pacific and Central business hours.

Nice to have

• Experience serving US small businesses or a US CPA firm.
• Familiarity with Karbon, Digits or Double.
