Job summary

ESB is seeking a lead engineer to drive the onshore HV export cable system for major offshore wind projects in Ireland and the UK. You will own the lifecycle from early design through construction, commissioning and handover, ensuring safety, quality and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in HV underground cable engineering for transmission or large-scale renewable projects.
• Strong understanding of cable system design, installation techniques, thermal modelling, interface management, HV testing and commissioning.
• Good knowledge of standards such as IEC, CIGRE and related regulatory requirements.
• Ability to work autonomously, meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

• Technical Leadership: lead design, specification, and engineering assurance of the underground HV export cable system.
• Route Engineering & Civil Interface: oversee the onshore cable route design, trenching, ducting, HDDs and landfall interfaces.
• Standards & Compliance: ensure all deliverables meet IEC, CIGRE and statutory requirements; provide guidance on cable design, rating and earthing.
• Supplier & Contractor Management: lead technical engagement with manufacturers, installation contractors and consultants; review technical docs and QA plans.
• Construction & Installation Support: provide senior oversight during trenching, ducting, cable pulling, jointing, testing and commissioning.
• Risk & Interface Management: identify and manage risks across interfaces with offshore systems and substations.
• Asset Performance & Lifecycle: contribute to reliability modelling, maintenance strategies and operational constraints.
• Safety: prioritise safety in all aspects of work.
