Job summary

We are pleased to welcome an opportunity within our Emergency Department for a Band 6 Department Sister/ Charge Nurse to join our team. We are looking for an enthusiastic self‑motivated individual who is passionate about delivering high quality emergency care in a fast paced environment.

Main duties

As a Band 6 Department Sister/Deputy Charge Nurse in the Emergency Department your role is pivotal as a proficient role model and clinical expert working alongside the senior nursing team. You will also be expected to take charge of an area of the department and develop shift leader competencies under supervision.

  • Emergency or acute nursing experience at AFC Bands 5 or 6 with proficiency in the relevant skills appropriate to emergency care.
  • Evidence of being a competent triage practitioner.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • To be a good communicator.
  • Be willing to drive innovative practice within an emergency care setting.

The role requires the post holder to be able to cope in a changing environment, and to have good attention to detail and problem solving skills. There will also be the opportunity to develop management and leadership skills under the supervision of a Band 7.

Applicants will demonstrate experience of working in all areas of ED. All records of courses attended or competencies achieved must be brought to interview.

Job responsibilities
  • Work autonomously in all areas of the Emergency Department as required.
  • Provide supervision and evaluation of nursing care within the department and oversee individual areas of the department to ensure high quality care is maintained.
  • Regularly manage the flow of patients through their assigned areas of the department and maintain excellent communication with the shift leader.
  • Take charge of the department as required with the support of a senior nurse and use of competencies.
CLINICAL
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care for a defined group of patients with high level of acumen.
  • Provide direct nursing care to named patients.
  • Supervise care given to patients by junior staff, monitor standards and ensure adherence to evidence based practice.
  • Maintain accurate and appropriate nursing documentation and ensure communication and liaison with the multidisciplinary team and community agencies is maintained.
  • Contribute to the continuing development of the Emergency Department philosophy.
  • Be aware of and demonstrate practice based on evidence in nursing and research.
  • Assign patient care to team members ensuring high quality and continuity of care.
  • Participate in internal rotation within the Emergency Department including night duty.
MANAGEMENT
  • Manage and supervise allocated areas within the Emergency Department or take charge of the department in the absence of a senior nurse.
  • Participate and maintain the effective communication of information and data between team members, patient and family networks and offer appropriate support and advice.
  • Ensure the implementation of Trust, local and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines and contribute to the formation of these as required.
  • Initiate and develop new ideas and changes within the Emergency Department, encouraging staff participation and resulting in improvements in patient care.
  • Have responsibility for appropriate and cost effective use of resources.
  • Work within the Health and Safety at Work Act and report accidents/incidents with awareness of risk management.
  • Work as part of the team, liaise closely with senior colleagues, and respond positively to feedback from preceptors and colleagues.
  • Assist and become involved in line management responsibilities under the supervision of a senior sister.
EDUCATION
  • Maintain a suitable learning environment for all grades of staff.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of induction programmes for new members of staff.
  • Contribute to the learning needs of team members, student nurses and other students allocated to the Emergency Department.
  • Demonstrate a continuing process of attaining education, research, clinical and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrate a continuing awareness of groups of people who have differing needs, e.g. children and families, older people and ethnic groups.
PROFESSIONAL
  • Observe the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors at all times.
  • Maintain an up‑to‑date registration on the NMC register.
  • Always work in a manner that protects colleagues, patients and visitors from hazards.
  • Ensure compliance with mandatory and statutory training for oneself and allocated junior members of staff.
Person Specification
Qualifications – Essential
  • Registered Nurse, Midwife or ODP.
  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent level of education, training or experience.
  • A&E, ALS, ATNC or other relevant course.
  • MTS trained and competent.
Qualifications – Desirable
  • Management or Leadership qualification.
Knowledge/Experience – Essential
  • Experience as a staff nurse in ED or Acute setting.
  • Knowledge of adult and children’s safeguarding principles.
  • Knowledge of evidence based practice in relation to Emergency care.
  • Emergency Department quality Indicators and CQUINS.
Skills – Essential
  • The ability to develop and maintain communication with people on complex matters, issues and ideas and/or in complex situations.
Skills – Desirable
  • The ability to use data to inform changes required in care delivery and to effectively implement that change.
