Workshop Manager

Location: F&MS SC Chelmsford

Royal Mail is currently looking to add an experienced Workshop Manager to its Chelmsford site. As the Workshop Manager, you will play a pivotal role in delivering cultural change and will be accountable for the performance of your Workshop(s), focusing on key Maintenance scorecard indicators such as Safety, Legal compliance, Cost, People, and Stakeholder performance.

This is an exciting time to join the Royal Mail Fleet team as we work towards our goal of achieving an all-electric delivery fleet by 2035. This involves managing over 50,000 vehicles and trailer assets, including activities like buying and selling vehicles, maintenance, accident repairs, and fuel and supplier contract management.

About the Role

You will be essential in ensuring fleet performance and meeting operational requirements efficiently and cost-effectively. Your responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring compliance with legal and safety policies and meeting safety targets, as well as delivering maintenance services and optimizing costs through resource planning and booking tools.
  • Optimizing the efficiency of Fleet Workshops to meet industry standards and managing changes related to Fleet Workshops.
  • Engaging, communicating with, and coaching the Fleet Workshop team to support their development.
  • Achieving targets, including internal customer SLAs, using effective performance management techniques.
  • Supporting ISO 9001 quality standards and continuous improvement activities within the Workshops.
  • Managing local IR interfaces and collaborating with union colleagues to implement change.

You will also oversee mobile sites and sub-locations under your control.

About You

You should be fully qualified to at least advanced level (IMI Level 3) in Light or Heavy vehicle maintenance & repair or hold an equivalent qualification. You are an experienced team leader with relevant industry knowledge and dispersed maintenance operations experience. Additionally, you should:

  • Manage and build relationships with stakeholders.
  • Influence and deliver results through people.
  • Manage relations with Trade Union partners.
  • Lead, develop, and coach teams to enhance performance.
  • Be flexible to cover multiple shifts and willing to travel to other sites within your area.
