Job description

We're looking for a Senior WordPress Developer who is passionate about building brilliant WordPress websites and human focused experiences on the web. You'll be an experienced developer who loves the buzz of agency life and enjoys collaborating on a wide range of projects with a team as passionate as you are about websites that put people and planet first. This is an opportunity to join our open-minded and creatively-curious team, working together to deliver exciting, innovative, accessible, and sustainable websites.

About Wholegrain Digital

Established in 2007, Wholegrain is on a mission to build a greener internet that's designed for people and kinder to the planet by creating human-led, low carbon websites for brands with purpose.

  • We are B Corp certified
  • We are part of 1% for the Planet
  • We are a certified vegan inclusive employer
  • We are a hybrid business

Although Wholegrain is based in London, our team of 18 are spread outside of the capital. Collectively, we work to create an inclusive and supportive environment which actively encourages personal growth and innovation as well as leaving space for the team to challenge and be challenged, regardless of their background, identity or job title.

About our recruitment process

Stage 01 - Screening: No need for a CV, all we ask is you answer some screening questions. We are much more focused on your values and core skills at this point. Your name and personal details will be hidden before the screening takes place.

Stage 02 - Skills task: A short task that takes no more than 2 hours is issued. We are not looking for the task to be perfect, it's more about understanding how you work so we can support you better if you do join our team.

Stage 03 - Conversation: The final stage is to talk to each other. We make sure each person who takes part in this stage is asked the same questions and therefore given the same opportunity.

About the role

The majority of the time you'll be working to deliver, maintain, and improve world-leading sustainable WordPress websites for the mission aligned organisations we work with. You'll be expected to estimate technical solutions but primarily you will be in and around the code.

  • Scoping, estimating, and producing acceptance criteria for development tasks.
  • Upholding standards for development work across the team.
  • Managing development tasks and workflow in Jira.
  • Supporting tech leads with management and evolution of the development team.
Who you will work with

Team: Generally you'll be working closely with our Tech Leads and the other developers within our team, as well as the wider agency and the organisations we partner with, bringing technical expertise to a wide range of conversations.

Clients

The organisations you'd be working with sit firmly within the purpose driven space and we have a robust ethical screening process to ensure this remains in place. This could be in any sector from charity through to commercial but they all share our values and want to improve the lives of people and lessen the impact we are having on the planet. It's really important that people align to who they work with.

To note before you do, please don't use AI to support you with your answers. Whilst it is tempting to use AI to create the 'perfect response', finding the right role for you and the right candidate for us requires a human touch.

Required skills and experience

You have strong foundational PHP knowledge with several years' experience developing using WordPress theme templating and other core functionality. You work regularly with industry-standard plugins and are comfortable with the Gutenberg editor. You're familiar with WP-CLI and other tools to help administer, migrate, and manage sites. On the frontend, you have a rock-solid understanding of HTML, you build using modern CSS layout techniques, and have a healthy sprinkling of vanilla JS expertise.

Complimentary development experience: You're confident with local development, version control, build tools, third-party integrations, and managing sites via hosting platforms. You have experience scoping technical requirements, clearly estimating time for delivering work, and supporting a wider team with development-related considerations.

A positive perfectionist mindset: You want sites to be great in all aspects, whether that's performance, accessibility, sustainability, or IA, UX and design, but you're confident in balancing this with a realistic approach to delivering projects successfully, and you have a thirst for understanding the technical aspects of ensuring standards are met.

Empathetic working approach: You can balance your technical expertise with an appreciation for multiple perspectives and objectives, and you can clearly communicate complicated concepts to a variety of audiences. You enjoy helping others succeed and exploring solutions with them.

Although we appreciate every candidate's unique background and knowledge, for this role we are looking for talents who have experience in agency life.

Benefits
  • 22 days holiday + 8 bank holidays as a full time team member
  • A 5 day shut down period over the end of the year
  • Your birthday off or the Friday before if it lands on a weekend
  • The opportunity to flex your working hours around your life and commitments by using our Flexible Working Policy
  • Monthly in-person team time at our office in Sustainable Ventures, with travel expenses covered

  • An annual team retreat to recharge and reconnect as a group
  • Opportunities for learning and development by attending conferences and training courses
  • Obviously the usual applies like the equipment that you need to complete your work day to day
