Job summary

Northumberland County Council is recruiting for Wellbeing & Community Adviser roles in Morpeth to provide frontline welfare support and guidance to residents. The fixed-term position offers opportunities to assist with welfare, benefits, and community services, working within the Public Health, Stronger Communities and Inequalities service.

You will assess individual circumstances, determine suitable support pathways, and promote independence while contributing to Communities First initiatives.

The Service

Safe and Resilient Communities exists to create safe, resilient, and thriving communities by enabling coordinated and asset‑based approaches that reduce inequalities, prevent escalation of need, and improve the life chances of residents. Working collaboratively with statutory partners, voluntary organisations, and local communities, the service supports neighbourhood‑level solutions that strengthen connections, increase independence, and minimise unnecessary demand on statutory services.

It leads the development and delivery of welfare support policies, community safety initiatives, and resilience programmes that help residents prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies or wider societal challenges. Through strategic collaboration with leisure providersand community partners, the service also supports the delivery of inclusive sport, active living, and community hub activities that promote wellbeing and widen access for all. Overall, the service acts as a strategic enabler, bringing partners together to deliver coordinated, preventative, and community‑focused outcomes.

The Role

We are recruiting for 2 x Wellbeing and Community Adviser’s to provide frontline advice, guidance and support to residents accessing welfare and crisis assistance services across Northumberland. This is a rewarding role where you will work directly with residents, helping them access financial support, benefits, local welfare assistance and wider community services.

As a key member of the team, you will assess individual circumstances, identify appropriate support pathways and ensure residents receive timely and effective assistance. You will also play an important role in promoting independence, improving outcomes and supporting the Council's Communities First approach.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Undertaking initial enquiries, assessments and triage to identify residents' financial, social and wellbeing needs.
• Providing advice, guidance and signposting to welfare, financial and community support services.
• Assessing eligibility and making decisions on local welfare assistance applications in line with agreed policies and procedures.
• Managing a caseload from initial assessment through to resolution, ensuring a high standard of customer support.
• Identifying safeguarding concerns and taking appropriate action where required.
• Monitoring case activity and financial awards, escalating risks and identifying trends to support service improvement.
• Supporting and coordinating the day‑to‑day work of colleagues, providing guidance and promoting consistent practice.
• Working with partner organisations and delivering outreach activity to support early intervention and improve outcomes for residents.

This role is ideal for someone with experience of supporting vulnerable individuals, strong communication and decision‑making skills, and a passion for helping residents access the support they need to improve their wellbeing and quality of life.

Please note: this role is fixed term until 31 March 2029.
