Job summary

Northumberland County Council is seeking a Skills & Employability Adviser (VALOUR) to deliver personalised employment support to Armed Forces community members and other eligible residents across Northumberland. You will manage a caseload, provide one-to-one guidance, mentoring and job search support to help individuals enter and stay in work.

The role involves working with employers, training providers and partners to create opportunities, administer financial support, and ensure compliance

Qualifications

  • Experience in employability, careers guidance or welfare-to-work programmes.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Knowledge of employment and training opportunities.
  • Ability to motivate and support individuals facing barriers to work.

Responsibilities

  • Managing a caseload of jobseekers, supporting progression towards and sustaining employment.
  • Assessing employment, skills and training needs and developing personalised action plans.
  • Providing tailored employability support, including CV development, job applications, and interview preparation.
  • Delivering one-to-one and group-based support sessions to improve confidence and work readiness.
  • Working with employers to identify vacancies, support recruitment activity and match candidates to opportunities.
  • Building relationships with training providers, employers and partner organisations to maximise opportunities for clients.
  • Providing in-work support to help individuals sustain employment and achieve long-term outcomes.
  • Maintaining accurate records, monitoring performance and ensuring programme and funding compliance.
  • Administering financial support where appropriate to help individuals overcome barriers to employment.

Safe and Resilient Communities exists to create safe, resilient, and thriving communities by enabling coordinated and assetâ€‐based approaches that reduce inequalities, prevent escalation of need, and improve the life chances of residents. Working collaboratively with statutory partners, voluntary organisations, and local communities, the service supports neighbourhood‐level solutions that strengthen connections, increase independence, and minimise unnecessary demand on statutory services.

It leads the development and delivery of welfare support policies, community safety initiatives, and resilience programmes that help residents prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies or wider societal challenges. Through strategic collaboration with leisure providersand community partners, the service also supports the delivery of inclusive sport, active living, and community hub activities that promote wellbeing and widen access for all. Overall, the service acts as a strategic enabler, bringing partners together to deliver coordinated, preventative, and community‐focused outcomes.

We are recruiting for a Skills & Employability Adviser (VALOUR) to deliver personalised employment support to members of the Armed Forces community and other eligible residents across Northumberland. This is a rewarding role where you will work directly with individuals to build confidence, develop skills and support them into sustained employment, training and learning opportunities.

As a key member of the team, you will manage a caseload of clients, providing one-to-one guidance, mentoring and job search support tailored to individual needs. You will also work closely with employers, training providers and partner organisations to create opportunities and ensure clients receive the support needed to successfully enter and remain in work.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Managing a caseload of jobseekers, supporting them to progress towards and sustain employment.
  • Assessing employment, skills and training needs and developing personalised action plans to overcome barriers.
  • Providing tailored employability support, including CV development, job applications, interview preparation and job search activities.
  • Delivering one-to-one and group-based support sessions to improve confidence, employability and work readiness.

  • Building strong relationships with training providers, employers and partner organisations to maximise opportunities for clients.

  • Administering financial support where appropriate to help individuals overcome barriers to employment.

This role is ideal for someone with experience in employability, careers guidance or welfare‑to‑work programmes who is passionate about helping people achieve their goals. You will havestrong communicationand relationship‑building skills, knowledge of employment and training opportunities, and the ability to motivate and support individuals facing a range of barriers to work.

Please note: this role is fixed term until 31 July 2029.
