Job summary

Veritas Education is seeking a dedicated Supply SEN Secondary Teacher to support students aged 11–19 with physical, learning, sensory or behavioural needs across SEN units, mainstream schools and specialist settings.

You will adapt the secondary curriculum, deliver engaging lessons, monitor progress and collaborate with SENCOs, therapists and teaching teams to promote independence and social development.

Job description

Job Title: Supply SEN Secondary Teacher

The Role:

A dedicated and adaptable Supply SEN Secondary Teacher working with students aged 11-19 years who have physical, learning, sensory, communication or behavioural difficulties. You will deliver engaging and accessible lessons across special schools, alternative provisions and mainstream SEN units, adapting the secondary curriculum to meet individual needs and supporting students to develop their independence, life skills and social skills.

As a Supply Teacher, you will have the opportunity to work across a range of educational settings, providing consistency, encouragement and high-quality teaching wherever you are needed.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lesson Planning & Delivery - Deliver engaging lessons and adapt the curriculum to break down complex concepts into small, manageable steps to suit individual learning styles and abilities.
• Individual Support Plans - Follow and contribute to EHCPs, IEPs and individualised support plans, ensuring teaching and support are tailored to each student's needs.
• Progress Tracking & Assessment - Assess student attainment, mark work and maintain accurate records of academic, social and personal development.
• Behaviour Support - Implement positive behaviour management and de-escalation strategies, creating a safe, calm and supportive learning environment.
• Emotional & Pastoral Support - Build positive relationships with students, providing reassurance, emotional support and encouragement to promote confidence and self-esteem.
• Strong Collaboration - Liaise effectively with teaching assistants, SENCOs, parents, carers, therapists, psychologists and other professionals involved in supporting students.
• Sensory & Regulation Support - Incorporate sensory activities, regulation opportunities, sensory circuits, Zones of Regulation and other strategies to support students' emotional and sensory needs.
• Adaptability - Quickly adapt to different school environments, routines and student needs while maintaining a consistent and professional approach.

Requirements:

• Ability to empathise with vulnerable pupils and patiently build trust and rapport.
• Emotional resilience with the capacity to remain calm under pressure and maintain clear, consistent boundaries.
• Strong communication and active listening skills, with the ability to manage challenging situations effectively.
• Experience working with children or young people with additional educational needs in an educational, care or specialist setting.
• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
• Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is mandatory. (We can help advise on this.)
• Knowledge and understanding of SEN, safeguarding and positive behaviour management.
• Specialist training or qualifications such as Team Teach, MAPA, Makaton, PECS, Autism or Safeguarding training would be advantageous.
• Ability to work flexibly across different schools and adapt quickly to new environments.
