IonQ, Inc. in Oxford, UK is seeking a highly technical Staff Software Engineer for the System Orchestration team.

You will build and operate the software that calibrates and coordinates our quantum systems, keeping machines busy and productive while delivering reliable results. You will work hands-on in Rust, with a focus on stateful, distributed services exposed over gRPC/REST, and you’ll shape the control plane as the fleet grows, collaborating with runtime, systems, and science teams to

Qualifications

• Deep systems engineering experience and reliable data handling.
• Experience building and operating stateful networked services with exposure over gRPC or REST.
• Proven ability to diagnose complex live-system issues and ensure data durability.

Responsibilities

• Work across the control plane to support reliable system delivery.
• Remove failure classes and improve the determinism of the system.
• Define service boundaries, write contracts, and migrate code accordingly.
• Build tooling and tests to accelerate the team.
• Evolve deployment and operation practices as the fleet grows.
• Provide clear design decisions in writing and review code to raise quality.
