Job summary

IonQ, Inc. is seeking a highly technical Senior Software Engineer for the System Orchestration team in System Software at Oxford Ionics, Oxford, UK. You will own device controllers, design robust services, and integrate hardware as part of the world’s leading quantum platform.

You will work closely with runtime and systems teams to ensure reliable calibration, scheduling, and recording of experiments, while growing in a fast-moving, highly technical environment.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience building stateful services that stay correct under failure.
• Ability to own a problem area with minimal supervision.
• Proficiency in Rust or another systems language with interest in Rust codebases.
• Experience designing and operating networked services (gRPC/REST) with solid error handling.

Responsibilities

• Own a group of device controllers end to end, including API design, implementation, rollout and operational health.
• Make services robust against instrument failures and edge cases.
• Migrate devices onto the current framework and roll out fleet-wide without disrupting experiments.
• Improve the shared framework to cover common patterns rather than single cases.
• Collaborate with systems teams and scientists to strengthen observability, health checks and alerts.
• Mentor less experienced engineers and raise coding standards through peer review.
