Job summary

IonQ, Inc. in the UK is hiring a highly technical Staff Software Engineer for the System Orchestration team in Oxford.

You will design and operate the control plane that calibrates quantum systems, schedules programs, and maintains full history of runs to keep quantum computers productive around the clock. This hands-on role requires deep systems engineering, experience with stateful services exposed over gRPC/REST, and a strong bias for deterministic design and observability.

Qualifications

• Deep systems engineering experience building durable, live-data services.
• Strong background in operating stateful networked services at scale.
• Proficiency with gRPC or REST APIs and fault-tolerant design.
• Experience with observability, metrics, tracing and incident response.

Responsibilities

• Own the design and operation of the control plane for calibration and scheduling of quantum programs.
• Ensure data durability, crash recovery, and migrations with live data.
• Improve determinism and reduce latency in the service path with robust engineering solutions.
• Build tooling and test infrastructure to move the fleet faster and more reliably.
