Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Haematology & Blood Transfusion

HCAS (Inner or outer) will be based upon your allocated site

We require strong team players with a positive attitude to working in a flexible manner, committed to supporting the clinical services of the Trust and meeting the needs of our patients by participating in a 24-hour Agenda for Change shift system.

The successful candidates will be primarily based at one of the following sites but may be expected to cover and support other ESEL sites depending on service demand.

The ESEL partnership consists of the following hub and spoke sites: Royal London Hospital (hub), St Bartholomew's Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital, Newham University Hospital, Homerton Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Woolwich) and University Hospital Lewisham.

All laboratories are UKAS accredited, utilise Winpath LIMS and are equipped with Sysmex systems in Haematology and Coagulation across all sites. Blood Transfusion employs Ortho analysers to support the largest Blood Transfusion department in the UK.

Main duties of the job

The Specialist Haematology section at RLH is equipped with Bio-rad Variant II and Sebia Capillarys systems whilst the Specialist Haemostasis section offers an extensive testing repertoire to support the respective Comprehensive Care Centres within Barts Health for haemophilia, sickle cell anaemia, thalassaemia and paediatric haematology.

The successful candidate MUST be registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist AND have completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio.Note: Candidates who do not hold the completed IBMS Specialist Diploma may be considered but will be taken on under an Annex 21 contract where a percentage of Specialist Band 6 BMS salary will apply.

Training support will be provided for completion of the IBMS Specialist Diploma across a day and night working pattern.

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites. Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.

The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE. Job responsibilities

The post holder will undertake technical and scientific procedures within Haematology and Blood Transfusion. Have responsibilities for the support, maintenance and development of the quality, learning and health and safety, Management Systems within designated work area. To work collaboratively between work areas and networked laboratories as well as participate in the AfC hybrid (day & night) rosters.

Qualifications

• BSc. Biomedical Science or equivalent Holder of the IBMS Certificate of Competence, Registration Portfolio.
• Evidence of continuous professional development.
• Registered as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council

Experience

• Post HCPC registration diagnostic experience in Haematology & Blood Transfusion.
• Experience with a computerised laboratory information system.
• Previous experience working in a large medical laboratory.
• Experience of working as a team
• Experience of a variety of diagnostic techniques in Haematology and Blood Transfusion
• Experienced using the following named IT systems oWinPath Enterprise (Clinisys). oQ-Pulse
• Demonstrate ability to use own initiative when dealing with patients/staff to solve problems

Knowledge

• Advanced scientific knowledge for relevant discipline
• Detailed understanding of UKAS, Quality Management Systems
