Infinitesima was spun out of the University of Bristol in 2001 and has been developing innovative metrology solutions which improve speed and precision in the manufacture of semiconductors. The company’s technology combines the 3-dimensional surface detection capability of atomic force microscopy (AFM), with high-speed laser activation and the accuracy of interferometry. The Rapid Probe Microscope (RPM™) is protected by an extensive patent portfolio. The company’s RPM™ technology is being used by leading semiconductor equipment companies globally. Semiconductor devices provide the foundations on which progress in the technology sector are enabled. From Smartphones to Artificial Intelligence, 5G communications to autonomous vehicles, all are made possible through advances in semiconductor processes. Scaling these processes requires sub‑nanometer measurement of increasingly complex 3D structures to enable more powerful devices.

Reports To

The position of Software Director reports to the Senior Director Design & Engineering.

Primary Purpose

The position of Software Director provides a key leadership role within the Infinitesima. This individual is responsible for defining and executing the software strategy, leading a team of software engineers, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, robust, and user-friendly software solutions that are integral to our cutting‑edge complex metrology products. This role requires a strong technical background, exceptional leadership skills, and a deep understanding of software development best practices cross‑functional engineering team. The individual will need to be able to work closely with peers across the business to ensure the software strategy meets anticipated business requirements.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Own a coherent software strategy for the company including delivering new features and managing technical debt and align this effectively with the other functions/departments.
  • Manage the three software competence managers. The focus of the role is on software leadership, where the s/w competence managers (in C#, LabView and Python) bring the expertise in the specific languages.
  • Work with architects to drive the architectural design and development of software systems, ensuring scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Ensure the effective management of the team: career development, resourcing/recruitment, mentoring, training, appraisals.
  • Build and embed appropriate processes to ensure best practice is used and supports continuous improvement, including software test.
Professional Skills/ Abilities:
  • >10 years team‑lead and people‑management experience including >5 years’ experience managing software managers.
  • Experience of software development for machine tools, desktop applications and real‑time control, or similar.
  • Experience integrating software with hardware which is also under constant development and an ability to plan effectively in conjunction with other teams with emerging requirements.
  • Agile experience and pragmatic application of agile/lean methodologies to development in a multi‑disciplinary environment.
  • Proven ability to implement change to facilitate best practice/continuous improvement.
  • Experience working with external partners as part of overall software delivery.
  • Deep knowledge of the software development cycle, and programming best practices.
  • Experience of the high‑volume manufacture (HVM) semiconductor industry is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience of incorporating 3 rd party code to address required standards is desirable but not essential.

  • Self‑motivated and able to support and inspire a team to do their best work and work collaboratively to self‑develop.
  • Positive and collaborative, who will seek to find pragmatic solutions to continuously align with dynamic business priorities
  • Excellent communicator, both written and verbally.
  • Role is predominantly an onsite role – some work from home is possible.
