Service Manager - Environmental Services

35 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Permanent
£60,745 - £66,183 / £33.29 - £36.27 per hour (including Distant Islands Allowance)

Orkney Islands Council is looking for an experienced environmental services manager with the drive, vision and commitment to take forward their future waste and recycling strategy and ensure that services reflect the needs of the local communities, the current and future regulatory and legislative environments and provide best value to the Council.

A key part of this role will be to drive the implementation of the Waste Strategy which looks to see a step-change in Orkney’s ability to collect and process recyclable materials and act as an enabler for the development of circular economy opportunities in the County. In addition, you will be responsible for the development and delivery of associated policies and strategies, management of the collection and treatment of materials and accountable for the operational delivery of the service which provides kerbside collections to households across Orkney Mainland and the Isles. The Council also operates two Waste Transfer Stations, 3 Household Waste Recycling Centres and 2 Recycling Centres together with a number of recycling points.

Excellent communication and facilitation skills, together with a sound, practical knowledge of waste and recycling legislation will be a requirement, in addition to significant relevant management experience and a proven ability to lead and manage complex change projects.

The minimum knowledge required for this role can be evidenced by either holding a qualification at SCQF 8/9 i.e. SVQ4, HND, General Degree, Higher Apprenticeship, Technical Apprenticeship, or having a minimum of 5 years previous relevant experience, as detailed in the experience section of this person specification.

Ability to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service.
