Job summary

WSP is seeking an experienced Principal Structural Engineer to lead the design and delivery of underground structures, including tunnels and shafts, across the UK, Ireland, and internationally. You will collaborate with civil, geotechnical and environmental teams to deliver landmark projects and mentor engineers.

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; postgraduate preferred.
• Extensive experience in structural design for underground shafts and tunnels.
• Strong understanding of ground-structure interaction and complex loading.
• Familiarity with tunnelling methods (TBM, NATM, SCL).
• Proficiency in structural analysis software and geotechnical tools.
• Ability to manage complex projects and lead diverse teams.
• Willingness to travel within the UK and internationally.

Responsibilities

• Lead structural design for underground structures from concept through construction.
• Develop safe, efficient, and innovative solutions for underground projects.
• Ensure compliance with Eurocodes, BS codes, ITA guidelines, local regs.
• Perform and review load assessments and ground-structure models.
• Collaborate with geotechnical teams on ground behaviour integration.
• Manage multi-disciplinary project delivery with civil, geotechnical and environmental inputs.
• Provide construction method guidance and materials selection for underground works.
• Conduct site inspections and supervise tunnelling operations.
• Mentor junior engineers and support knowledge sharing.
