Job description

Remote working within the UK is fully supported for this role; successful candidates may be required to travel to the nearest UNiDAYS campus (London or Nottingham) on occasion.

As a key member of our Platform team, this role offers an exciting opportunity to drive platform strategy, cloud automation and developer experience to the next level. You will work closely with software engineering teams to identify improvements that enhance developer productivity, system performance, reliability, scalability, security, and efficiency. The platform team also removes barriers for other teams, championing operational excellence through automation and self‑serving capabilities. We’re looking for a commercially‑mindful Platform Engineer who can bridge user needs and business goals to build resilient, cost‑effective, future‑proof solutions.

Day to Day Responsibilities

• Build, test and implement cloud services via IaC.
• Collaborate with software engineers to understand platform value and up‑skill them on cloud needs.
• Identify new technologies and drive improvements across shared tooling, modules, and packages.
• Create and enhance self‑serving capabilities for software teams.
• Monitor platform performance and identify improvement areas with an SRE mindset for SLIs and SLOs.
• Define, improve, implement and document best practices continually.
• Participate in on‑call (one week per month, typically one call a fortnight).
• Mentor, train and share knowledge with other engineers.
• Evaluate and measure your own performance and seek continuous feedback.
• Commit to regular check‑ins, monthly 1:1s with your line manager and complete quarterly, mid‑year and year‑end reviews on time.
• Complete all mandatory training or workshops set by the business or your manager.
• Align with UNiDAYS values and behaviours.
• Demonstrate strong stakeholder management and lead others.
• Communicate clearly; keep priorities focused; embrace entrepreneurship and collaboration; adapt to the unknown.

Core Qualifications

• Strong cloud knowledge, including hands‑on experience with a wide range of AWS services.
• Proficient IaC background (CloudFormation & Terraform preferred).
• Experience with ECS across multiple environments.
• Knowledge of security, networking, CDN, load balancing and storage solutions.
• Good understanding of CI/CD practices across multiple environments.
• Development experience in one of the core languages (C#, Python, TypeScript).
• AWS / Terraform certification.

Nice to Have

• Database administration experience (MSSQL, RDS, DynamoDB, Neptune, Redshift).
• Mentoring, training or knowledge sharing background.
• Knowledge of containerisation.
• Incident management and RCA experience.
